The floor moved before the sound did.
For one disoriented second Hua Yong thought it was something wrong with his own body, some vertigo, the world tilting under him without permission. Then the groan of the building came, low and enormous, a sound with mass to it, and the shelves around them began to shudder and then to lean, and dust sifted down from the ceiling in a fine gray rain, and he understood, with the particular clarity that came to him in danger, that the ground itself had turned against them.
"Wenlang!" he started to shout, already turning, already reaching, and that was when the ceiling above them gave way.
He didn't see it fall so much as feel the change in the air, a pressure, a wrongness, and then Wenlang's hands were on him, shoving him hard to the side with a strength that didn't match the calm, unhurried person he'd been a second before, throwing him clear of it, and Hua Yong hit the floor and rolled and came up already turning back, already shouting Wenlang's name into the roar of collapsing wood and stone.
