Summary
There are men turning up dead in the woods, and Chief of Police Charlie Swan has a job to do—figure out what, or who, left the poor bastards torn up as they are. Chief of Police Charlie Swan is too old for this mess. Too old and too sick of this shit to pretend Forks is just a sleepy old rural town anymore. Between the gruesome corpses and the quiet, unsettling doctor Cullen who shows up like a statue in pressed slacks, lying through his teeth, Charlie’s got more questions than answers—and no one seems too keen on giving him either.
Charlie’s trying not to notice how his breath catches when the doc gets too close. He’s also trying not to notice how the bodies keep piling up, unsolved. Neither effort is going particularly well.
And if one more person tells him it was a bear, he’s going to shoot something. Probably not a bear.

Summary
Rook walked over to him and undid the first buttons of his shirt, but Lucanis ripped the rest off, sending the buttons scattering. He had no intention of waiting for him to open every last one of the crow-headed buttons. Some landed downstairs in the alley full of lanterns for people to find later.
Rook unbuckled his belt next and pulled Lucanis’ trousers down a second time today, but this time, he tossed them aside. They landed precariously, hanging from the edge of the platform. It was fine, Lucanis did not need them now– if they fell, he would rather trek unclothed later to the busy alley below to get them than get sidetracked now.
Hundreds of decorative lanterns were glowing above them in erratic lines. The aesthetics of Minrathous were not generally Lucanis’ cup of tea, but this part was beautiful. Lantern Lane was empty– they were its only visitors tonight.
