“That’s great, Em,” she means to say immediately. Brightly, effortlessly. “Tell me everything.”
Instead, what comes out is small and terribly honest.

Every lunch, coffee, exhibition, text, and late-night call had been proof of it. Still, it felt absurd how naturally and quickly they had slipped back into each other’s lives.
For Emily it was too good to be true.
For Andrea it was a miracle she would not waste.
It no longer surprised Nigel when Andrea left abruptly to pick up Emily’s kids, or when the Brit had a reserved parking spot waiting in front of Runway.
So of course, people who knew them less could misunderstand.
