While on a night patrol in the castle, King Arthur hears a stranger approach, knowing all should be asleep, he jumps the stranger, choking them against the wall but finds Merlin instead, who seems to be enjoying the grip on his throat a bit too much. Arthur thought this was going to be a one time occurrence before it happens again, two weeks later.

"What?" came Merlin's clipped response from the corner after a moment.
Arthur turned around to face his captive. "Be this," he gestured at Merlin broadly. "Be defiant, brave...stoic...all the time. It's painful to watch."
Merlin did not answer. Arthur sighed.
"Just...just...when that door closes, when we reach the end of the day. Just allow yourself to relax for just a while." Arthur tried on a small smile, holding his palms up in a gesture of surrender. "I promise I won't tell anybody."

It has been six months since both Merlin’s magic and his pregnancy were revealed, and six months since he was locked inside an opulent guest room turned prison cell. Arthur hasn’t been to visit him – not once – despite the fact that the child Merlin is carrying is his, and Merlin still doesn’t know whether an execution awaits him on the other side of his pregnancy. If he even survives it, that is. Because it has also been six months since Merlin’s magic was locked away by iron cuffs, and the strain is making him weaker by the day.
Tired of waiting and deciding that he can’t allow an innocent baby to grow up in a Camelot that hates magic, Merlin strikes a deal with Agravaine that will ensure the safety of his unborn child.

Summary
Those with magic killed his father when he was thirteen, leaving Arthur with a kingdom, a throne, and a enemy. The Druids speak of Emrys as magic itself, the perfect token of vengeance and spoils of war for Arthur to claim. Neither victory nor Emrys are what Arthur expects. His kingdom has no honor, he doesn’t feel like a king, and his prisoner believes he can bring about a Camelot he can be proud of. Perhaps there is more to the Druid prophecies than the lies his uncle has told him.
**Dark Camelot AU. Mentions of rape, physical abuse, and death. None of it between Merlin & Arthur.**
