It was true she’d suspected Koujirou was married already, Tome thinks as she rises, but she’d thought back then that perhaps his wife had been sickly; perhaps she didn’t please him and so he avoided her as much as he could. Knowing what she knows now, she can’t imagine his marriage has gone stale within a month, and yet he’d come to her, just as he’d promised he would. But Tome had seen the icy remoteness of Lady Hanazawa’s character; she’d wondered, as they’d eaten their shaved ices, whether it would even melt in her mouth. But then, she’d heard jokes about women like that – The colder on the surface, the hotter underneath – and she feels a shiver pass through her at the thought.

Vasily blinks and raises his eyes to actually look at the man for the first time. The other patron has barely moved since Vasily came in; he has occasionally heard the clink of his cup returning to his saucer, but nothing more, no tapping of fingertips on the tablecloth, no slurping of his tea. And yet the man seems to be aware of Vasily’s eyes on him now, for all that he’s looking away, his attention fixed on the empty corner opposite him. A curving lock of hair, black as a fresh stroke of ink, obscures the sliver of his face that Vasily should be able to see, the steeply angled sunlight making it throw a shadow across his cheek. As Vasily watches, the tip of his pencil hovering above the paper, the man finally moves, raising one broad-palmed hand to smooth the lock of hair back from his forehead.
Thousands of miles from the battlefield of Port Arthur, Ogata, Yuusaku, and Vasily cross paths in St. Petersburg.

Summary
The more damaged Noma realizes Ogata is, the more drawn to Ogata he becomes- but there is no helping someone who does not want to be helped.

Noma wanted to look away, but found himself unable to move. There was an overwhelming vulnerability in Ogata's appearance which felt too enormous to admit into thought, let alone words. So he didn’t. But not speaking of something did not lessen its presence.

Summary
If he'd killed Yuusaku at Port Arthur, Ogata thinks, their father would have finally acknowledged him. A man as proud and as calculating as Hanazawa Koujirou would never have let his family line wither away so easily, not when he had another potential heir in his back pocket. Ogata would have been adopted as soon as he set foot back on Japanese soil—taught manners and dressed up in a stuffy braided uniform, pinned with all manner of medals and squirreled into a commission that he wasn't even remotely trained for. He's sure of it.
It's right there in his ill-fitting name, Hyakunosuke, clumsy and overwrought for a farm boy, but perfectly appropriate for a back-up son of the Hanazawa family. A second son's name, no less, because Yuusaku has always come first; even before he was ever conceived, the mere possibility that he might one day exist had been enough to keep Ogata shunted behind the spot reserved for him.

The garden is striking, in the way that all dreadful things are. There's been an effort by the gardeners to arrange the flowers nicely, to make it look like they were chosen from the nursery on some aesthetic principle. There's been a well-mannered attempt to pretend that this is not a museum of violent ends, cobbled together from the overgrown desires of unruly hearts.

So that I know which division I’m gonna tell my guys is full of dickheads.” It’s an insult some army guys would take too seriously, but lucky for him, Ogata never gave a damn about that kind of bullshit.
“7th,” Ogata says, grin widening, “and I can confirm; we are full of assholes over there."
Ogata encounters a lonley soldier with a bandaged face in an abandoned trench of Mukden.
