Okay, Percy got it. From his mom's point of view it might have looked less innocent than it was. After all, she had found her son passionately kissing his girlfriend on his bed at 2:40 in the morning, but in his defense they also had been fully clothed but it really wasn’t what it looked like. He knew his mom wouldn’t believe the full story, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to try.

Summary
Hiccup is used to strange requests, especially since he strong-armed Gobber to move Berk Nursery to carry predominantly native plants. Or maybe strong-armed is the wrong term, since the agreement was that if he stopped ordering Japanese Honeysuckle and Butterfly Bushes, then Hiccup would have to personally deal with every frustrated customer, but the consequence of said schroedinger's strong-arming is that Hiccup has gotten very used to dealing with strange requests.
This might be the strangest.

Hiccup had tracked every scratch, dent, and wobble in Toothless’s fin from the moment he tried giving him his freedom. Sometimes, he checks it weekly. Other times? Daily.
It all depends on how many reckless dives they’ve pulled lately—and how often Toothless grins at him after something snaps. The dragon always knows when it’s about to break. He just likes to see Hiccup fuss.
So when Hiccup builds a self-flying tail, meant to allow Toothless to live independently…
Toothless lets him finish it. Keeps it, even. All the way up until they defeat Grimmel.
He just never planned for it to be permanent.
After all, who ever said he was leaving Berk?
