“Um,” Dick says, because there seems to be little point in trying to lie. He suspects that Mr. Wayne is the sort to silently suss you out without you ever even knowing. “I—I mean, it’s kind of hard for me. I just—” and Mr. Wayne’s expression is kindly, and patient, and clearly expecting more, and so Dick blusters on furiously, dam cut loose. “I miss the circus, and I miss my mom and my dad and everyone there and I miss being warm and my own bed and I want to go back, and I don’t know you, and you might have me kicked out tomorrow, and I’m pretty sure you’re infested with ghosts and this whole manor doesn’t make any sense, and I keep getting lost, and I don’t know you.” He’s not crying, but his chest heaves like he might be about to.
“Oh,” says Mr. Wayne, a little shocked, and then comes over down to the bed and gathers Dick up to his chest in a hug. “Oh, Dick—I wasn’t—”
But Dick isn’t listening to him. He shoves his face against Mr. Wayne, who is warm, and smells good, and probably gets snot all over his fancy silk robe that he’s clutching onto with his hands furiously.
