So here, on a random nondescript motel bed, lying next to Cheng Xiaoshi, whose breaths come and go, soft and even, Lu Guang stares. He counts the rise and fall of his chest. Watches the lamplight illuminate his face, and thinks, not for the first time, about death.
But also about living.
He wonders, sometimes, if it's possible to love a person too much. If, perhaps, it might be kinder to distance yourself, to keep them at arm's length. To save yourself the pain. But no, he knows that's not true. Love, once given, isn't a thing that can be taken back, and he gave it to Cheng Xiaoshi long ago. And if he can't keep Cheng Xiaoshi safe, then at least he can love him, with his whole self.
Love, he knows, is its own kind of immortality.

The refrigerator hummed. The monitor hissed faintly. Eddie could hear his own pulse, which seemed dramatic and unhelpful.
“What?” Eddie said.
Buck looked down, then back up. “Not like. I mean, legally. For Theo. For the stability thing.”
Eddie’s mouth had gone dry.
Buck kept talking. He did that when he was nervous. Built a whole staircase of words and then tried to jump down it. “I know it sounds insane. I know. And I’m not asking because I’m freaking out. I mean, I am always a little bit freaking out, but that’s not why. I’m asking because if I had to pick someone to have legal standing with Theo, someone who already shows up and knows him and knows me, it would be you.”
Eddie said nothing.
Buck’s face tightened. “You can say no.”
“I know.”
