They couldn’t communicate, but Five knew very well that he was with his family. And he’d noticed a pattern back with the chickens and bears that they were becoming more and more alive.
Slowly, they went from inanimate objects, to living creatures.
As his eyes closed after he’d been shot, he wondered where he’d find himself next.Then, he woke up in a nursing home.

The strangest thing about Jesper was the casual manner in which he touched people. He would put his arm around Wylan’s shoulder like it was the easiest thing in the world. He would bump shoulders with Wylan as they leaned over the boat without a second thought.
It was embarrassing how emotional it made Wylan. He wanted to cry the first time Jesper had thrown an arm around his shoulders. He had been telling Wylan a joke, and when he got to the punchline he had thrown his hands into the air. As Wylan had rolled his eyes, Jesper had casually put an arm around his shoulder.
No one had touched Wylan like that for as long as he could remember. He couldn't think of the last time someone had touched him without intending to hurt him.

Spinning delicate pieces of deadly art to catch their prey. Wylan knew he was a fly caught in a spider’s web, even when he was a boy. Wylan wanted his lab in the cellar. It always felt safe to him. He liked the dusty corners filled with spiders. Wylan needed the safety of the spiders and the dust today.

“And who is this?” Wylan asked, gaining Jesper’s attention. Jesper spun around at his voice, hands frozen where he was about to start pulling his shirt off. Wylan looked up from the toy, meeting Jesper’s gaze across the room. He was surprised to see how wide Jesper’s eyes had gotten, a hard red blush crossing his dark cheeks.
“That, is none of your business,” Jesper said, crossing to the bed in a few long strides, his hand reaching out for the rabbit as he pressed a knee into the mattress.
“She’s cute.”
