Hokuto had crushed pretty things before. He'd enjoyed it—the specific pleasure of something the world had decided was exceptional turning out not to be, the moment the surface gave and there was nothing underneath worth the trouble. He'd expected that. He'd wanted Uruha to be different and expected him to be the same and had been prepared to enjoy both outcomes, because that's the trick of it, that's how you stay sane doing what he does—you want something badly enough to chase it and hold it loosely enough that losing it doesn't take anything with it.
