Bruce was almost catatonic with shock, so Tim went to the scene of the crime alone - and found the shooter, waiting for a face-to-face with Batman. An almost-friendly spar led to a job offer, and the promise that Red Hood wasn't hard to find if Tim changed his mind.

"I'm not interested in feeding your ego, if that's what you're looking for," Tim says, as Jason makes his way across the warehouse rafters. Almost there. "You'll get your fucking ransom, but I'm not going to pretend to be cowed."
"You are a bitch," Head Guy says, almost contemplatively, and then he lifts his gun out of the holster and neatly pistolwhips Tim across the face.
Jason registers precisely two things. First, the sharp, resonating crack of the pistol across Tim's forehead. Second, and more importantly, Tim's small, pained inhale.
The next ten seconds or so are lost to Jason entirely.
When he comes back to himself, the absolute fucking bastard is falling at Jason's feet with a new bullethole through his skull and Tim is staring up at him with a slack-jawed expression. There's blood dripping down the side of his face. Only some of it is his.
"Hey," Jason says, stupidly.

Tim gets kidnapped. Jason takes this personally. Tim takes this to heart. You'll never guess what happens next.
