“I thought I lost you.”
Guilt. A common factor of post-traumatic stress, likely induced by a sense of responsibility for last night’s events.
“I’m still here,” Bruce turns, facing Clark completely. “Clark, I made the decision to fly that rocket. It would not have been your fault if I didn’t come back.” Despite peering into glossy blue eyes, the words come out matter-of-factly.
“It’s not that!” Clark’s free hand grabs at Bruce’s waist, bringing the other even closer. “Bruce, don’t you understand? You’re my best friend. I don’t know what I would do if… Gosh, Bruce, you’re supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, don’t you know how I feel about you?”
---
OR,
After saving the planet, Batman tries to delve right back into his work but finds he is unable to focus. When his best friend Superman shows up unexpectedly, the course of the night changes.

Summary
“This is a love story.” | “This is a detective story.”
When Clark Kent follows a lead into Gotham, he doesn’t expect to find himself face-to-face with the city’s true guardian: a bat with fangs, claws, and a half-feral silhouette in the dark. Suspicious, circling him like prey, Batman tests every ounce of Clark’s resolve - only for Clark’s soft, fumbling devotion to slip through anyway (“What the hay, are those fangs?”).
Between the silk shawls and champagne smiles of Bruce Wayne, Gotham’s pretty boy prince, and the blood-hungry shadow of the Bat, Clark finds himself caught between two men - one golden, one monstrous - and falling for both. Too earnest, too desperate, too willing to kneel if it means being near him.
Or: three ways Clark Kent breaks Bruce Wayne’s walls by humiliating himself, by offering himself, and by never stopping.

"Also... the other day I found a cat stuck in a tree. It was raining before the fire department got there, so I flew... I mean, I reached up and saved him. I hid him in my cape... I mean, my jacket. He could be our kid. You—you like adopting kids, don't you?"
Bruce froze.
Hal Jordan just wanted to get his heartbroken best friend drunk and distract him from a certain bald billionaire. He did not factor in John Constantine’s magic cocktails. He definitely did not factor in the bartender being Bruce Wayne.
And he absolutely did not factor in Superman trying to seduce Gotham's Dark Knight with a public library card and shared blog passwords.

"...Hold on." Hal's hand slid off Clark's shoulder. Pure terror flickered in his eyes.
"Are you saying... you fucked him more than five times a day? Every single day?"
"Yeah. It's natural for lovers to make love." Clark spoke with a dead serious, deeply wronged expression.

Superman can't save everyone. That was a fact that was hitting especially hard tonight. Bruce couldn't change that, it was part of the deal of being superheroes after all.
But he could provide a distraction, just for a little while. To stop the tears, just for now.
It's probably not the healthiest coping mechanism, but it worked.
