Summary
There is no need for chains. Without magic he is just a man, and not even a particularly fit one. He's no warrior like Karlach or Wyll. He can't overpower a vampire ascendant. He probably couldn't have even overpowered Astarion as a spawn.
Gale swallows his grief as the name comes to his mind unbidden. Astarion is dead, he reminds himself. Killed by the monster who now wears his face.
