    Summary

    It's 2016.

Shane Hollander. 25. Fresh off his second, consecutive Stanley Cup win. Captain of the Montreal Voyageurs.

An omega, too, though Hollander would never verbally express how much the media ticked him off whenever reporters bring up that fact despite the hard look in his eyes. The first known omega in the NHL. He was a trailblazer, but not by choice. 6 months prior to the second Stanley Cup win, his team rallied around him when some nosy nurse leaked his medical records to the internet.

Ilya Rozanov, 19, a rookie with the Boston Bears, and an alpha, can't wait to play against his hero. They say never meet your heroes, but Shane Hollander has always been an exception.

“We need you to argue again,” Dykstra says suddenly.

A few seconds of silence follow, three sets, four if you include Haasy looking up uncertainly every couple of seconds, of eyes trained on them expectantly.

“You want us to argue?” Shane repeats slowly, confusedly.

Bood nods solemnly. “We played the best game of the fucking season after your argument—”

“It wasn’t because of our argument,” Shane tries to counter, but Ilya’s pretty sure he even knows it’s pointless.

“It was because of your argument,” Wyatt says. “You need to argue on game days.”

Dykstra points between Shane and Ilya. “We need you to argue tomorrow. No questions asked. You are the Captain and the Captain’s first man.”

Sorry?” Shane says at the same time Ilya says, “No.”

Or the Ottawa Centaurs win a game after Shane and Ilya have a petty argument and turn it into a superstition. Texting fic edition.

    Summary

If he were sober, he might have recognized how catastrophically bad this idea was. That the roulette ball was not a sign, that they’d been playing for over an hour and it was bound to land on twenty-four eventually. But there was a buzzing warmth flooding his veins and a very loose grip on his rationality, so he headed away from the bar, through the lobby, and out onto the balmy Vegas strip. He leaned against a shadowed wall and scrolled to a contact he’d hovered over a thousand times before.

    This time, he called.

Or: Five years after Rose helped Shane come to terms with his sexuality, he’s done everything else on his own. Coming out, surviving the backlash, being traded to Ottawa. When the dust finally settles, Shane meets a nice guy from Montreal and tells himself he’s ready to move on. He’s definitely not thinking about Ilya. Or Ilya’s gorgeous Russian wife. Not at all.
