    Or, the one where a master firebender and his master fire-bending Uncle reside peacefully on the remote island of Kyoshi. And the Avatar needs to learn fire bending. And awaken a certain someone's older brother instincts. Add a little gay tension to the mix and you're ready for a real crisis of identity.

    At first, Sokka dismisses it.

    He notices, they all do, that Katara feeds Zuko less. A lot less. He notices that Zuko’s portions are often burnt and lacking any care, so even the little bit he does get is barely salvageable.

    Sokka notices, but he doesn’t care.

    (In which Fire Benders need to eat twice as much because they create their own fire. Based off Chapter 17 of "The One Where Zuko's Hair Matches Sokka's and Other Tales")

    They gravitated towards Zuko whenever the temperature dipped even slightly. At night, he often woke to someone pulling their bedroll towards him, or slipping under his arm, or turning over in their sleep and colliding with his shoulder.

    It alarmed him, at first. It had never been a good thing when someone woke him in the dead of the night.

    It was strange, then, that he was on the run without Uncle, officially a traitor to his homeland, and for the first time since his mother left, he woke in the night sandwiched between bodies, feeling safe.

    Five years after the war, Fire Lord Zuko and Metalbender Master Toph Beifong drink poisoned tea and die. They wake up in Ba Sing Se, right in the middle of the war. Being the responsible adult she is, Toph quickly forms a plan:

    1. Drink tea with Uncle Iroh (Zuko included).

    2. Don’t tell the GAang, because mystery is fun.

    3. Watch everyone lose their minds trying to figure out what’s going on.

    An AU where the four nations speak different languages:

    The plan had been simple...

    Step 1. Break the Avatar out of the Pohuai Stronghold.
    Step 2. Drag the Avatar back to his ship.
    Step 3. Sail home.
    Step 4. Present the Avatar to his father and have his honor restored.

    Nowhere in the plan had Zuko accounted for becoming injured and the Avatar dragging him back to their camp. It certainly hadn't accounted for them taking him prisoner. Nor had it accounted for the added complication of Avatar's companions not having the decency to learn the Common Dialect. Only the Avatar understands him and communication in the group is a tangled mess.

    Because when you don't speak the same language, how can you find a Common Ground?
