Steve has always known he isn’t as useful as the rest of their bizarre little monster hunting group - Hopper can fight and Nancy is a damn good journalist and Dustin and the kids work out the science and El has superpowers.
Steve can’t do any of that. He can barely keep up with them most of the time when they’re talking about electromagnetic fields and energy sources and the physics of the Upside Down. What he can do is swing a bat, he can run fast, he can be a distraction.
He can get between the people he loves and the monsters and keep them safe.

Basically, I was thinking about Spider-man being trapped under a building and then thought, "Hmm, what if Eleven was trapped under a building. With all her friends?" And this is what came out.
