Summary
Marina Ida has almost everything she wants. Her engineers, however, had conflict—the drive for the surface vs. the familiarity of the underground. This conflict is where Order thrives. Order can offer them peace in the familiar, promise a return to simpler times, when all were in harmony and things were good.
This is what Order offers Marina Ida. A return to before, when things were easier and she wanted for nothing, most of all the love of someone she could never have. The ease of childhood, perhaps, or maybe just the joy of letting go.
The problem, of course, is that Marina Ida has always been ambitious, ruthless, strong willed.
She calls out, she fights for control, she reaches for the knight she has on the ground, she sings—
And that will be Order’s downfall.

Finally, Zoey blurted it out, voice soft but sharp:
“Have you ever thought of… something besides monogamy?”
Mira’s thumb stilled on the screen. She looked up, slow. “…What?”
Zoey’s hands twisted in her lap. “Like—not open relationships. Just… not just one person. Have you ever thought about being with more than one person and it still being okay?”
She wasn’t looking at Mira. Her voice was tight, like it hurt to speak. Mira watched her with a furrowed brow, still quiet.
“I feel so guilty all the time. Because I love you, Mira. I love you, and this doesn’t change that, but I see her and I want to make her smile and I want her to hold my hand and I think she’s beautiful and weird and sweet and I—”
She finally looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
“I think I ruined us. And I’m so sorry.”
Mira just stared at her. Wide-eyed. Silent.
Zoey’s heart dropped. “Say something.”
Mira exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for a month.
Then she visibly deflated—shoulders dropping, head tilting back against the wall—and let out a quiet, choked laugh.
“…Oh thank god.”

“You…feel it? That…swoosh, swoosh, swoosh…buzzing behind your ears?”
Isha flinches each time the barrel of the woman’s pistol gets close to her face.
“You know, in a moment, it could all….poow! …Hmm. Best feeling in the world, kid”—the woman’s thumb playfully slides up and down her gun’s trigger—“the best goddamn feeling in the world.”
Isha looks to her side to avoid those vibrant, pink eyes, and finds multiple posters, all of them with the name of a woman who looks exactly like her savior.
Jinx.
The woman looks at the posters too. “Yep, that’s me. You ever need to curse a sibling or a family or a society…my card.”
Jinx walks away and puts her cloak on without looking back, disappearing into the green mist on the other side of the alleyway and still swinging around her gun.
Isha stumbles so quickly after Jinx she almost forgets her helmet.
