The younger man hums and slams the trunk close again. Bucky is quiet for a moment but Sam can hear him moving a little, the soft buzzing of his vibranium arm when he shift.
''I fucked up.''
Sam freezes, his hand hovering in the air with the car keys inside. Panic grips his lungs in a death-grip when he hears Bucky's voice again, suddenly audible trembling with emotions. He turns around, his eyes falling on the warehouse in the distance. It suddenly looks haunted, mocking him from where it stands far away.
Too far away.
Or, Bucky gets seriously injured during a mission.

Summary
While it was mildly concerning that so many strangers were invested in their private lives, Sam found comments about them wildly entertaining. His favorites were the ones asking if Bucky knew that it was now legal to like men.
Bucky did not have the same appreciation. "I was kissing men before any of those little shits on the internet were born. Of course I know it’s legal now," he once muttered in exasperation with his head on Sam’s lap, eyes on Sam’s phone instead of the book in front of him. The sincere indignation of it made Sam laugh so hard he couldn’t breathe.

Or, Sam and Bucky navigate keeping their relationship out of the public eye. Things don't go to plan.

“Bucky! Yo, cyborg brains!” Sam skirted around the disturbed dumpsters, wrinkling his nose. “Quit making a mess, man.” He caught up to Bucky, the alley narrowing as it ended.
Abruptly Bucky stopped ahead of Sam. Sam crashed into his back.
“Dude—“
“Shhh!” Bucky turned back and grabbed Sam’s shoulders, slotting them sideways in the alley together. Sam’s eyes widened, then he forced his expression back to quiet annoyance when Bucky’s eyes met his. The icy blue was calm now— calm and urgent.

“Loki,” he huffed, and could not have stopped the fond little smile spreading across his face if he had tried. “Are you asking for a hug?”
