The cormorant carries fish to its nest, an infant princess is carried out of Doriath in a vase on a housemaid’s back, the river carries mountains to the sea, the Nauglamir is carried out of the frigid forest around the infant’s neck, the sea carries continents into clouds, a spit-softened Silmaril crosses the sea in a blazing bird’s beak. This, I think, is the oldest covenant in the world.
