Summary
Nothing in Lindon is untouched, and everything has been carried here by something else. The cormorant carries fish to its nest, an infant princess is carried out of Doriath in a vase on a housemaid’s back, the river carries mountains to the sea, the Nauglamir is carried out of the frigid forest around the infant’s neck, the sea carries continents into clouds, a spit-softened Silmaril crosses the sea in a blazing bird’s beak. This, I think, is the oldest covenant in the world.

In a letter to Elrond, delivered to Elwing six thousand years later, Elros Tar-Minyatur reflects on his upbringing and explains what he means when he says he “chose mortality because his mother was a bird”.Bookmarked by ulmondil

Galadriel and Celeborn, through the Third Age of Middle-earth.
There are ways to express the difference between you wanted and I wish you wanted in Quenya by adding the right affix. In Sindarin you must change the sounds of the verb itself, the feeling soaking into the substance of the word. What is the lenited form of grief, he thinks. What is the right declension for a yearning without a name.

Summary
There are certain strains the songs always reach for yet never acknowledge. The Sindar are perpetually rooted: the trees know their king, the river comes when called, the girdle grows from the forest instead of enclosing the same. Ironically, the Noldor in exile are granted a similar ancestral fluency in mythic proportions, even by the scribes accused of being their greatest detractors. Finrod’s delving of Nargothrond is a harmonious communion with stone; the mallorn takes to Lothlórien like a native son returned. Whatever it is that the Eldar do to the landscape, the songs will declare it kinship. No such word exists for the rest of us. And so nobody knows why the line of Ulfang once chose the Foe, and kept choosing so.
________In Third Age Gondor, a spy from Rhún writes an account of the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, chronicling the treachery of Ulfang’s host against the Union of Maedhros as he follows the historical trail of a posthumous epithet: the simple prefix ul, the Sindarin word for unsightly.

Summary
"The sword remembered by history is rarely the sword that falls. The mistake is in thinking history exists to preserve a thing that happened, when in truth it only exists to replace what happened with an account of what happened. The true event retreats before its own record as a stone retreats beneath soft, vivid-green moss, each retelling another layer of growth, each layer another season's omission, until all that stands is the surface that has consumed the stone. The stone is still there, technically, at the core, but the core is no longer the story. The moss is the story. The moss is what you touch when you reach out to feel the stone."

“When they played in the caves, they were not Elwing-Elrond-Elros, mother and sons. They were three refugee children pretending to be ordinary children, feral in salt-stained clothes and their foremother's wide, watchful eyes. Up and down the shoreline, caves like these were claimed by Sirion's young to play in, designed, occupied and defended by children who understood that space you could call yours was temporary, that you took it when you found it and could lose it any time.“

Summary
"As the years pass, Gilraen becomes more confident that the idea of death no longer repulses Lord Elrond, that no longer might he find mortality a contagion, sinking into her as he does each night. She breathes easier, loosens her apron-strings, allows Estel a little more freedom, lets him stray farther from her sight, no longer so terrified that he might do something that would lose his father’s favour, might oust them back into the wilds to live and die short, fragmented lives, have him brought home horizontal on horseback with an arrow through his eye."
________________The torrid, scandalous, fifty-year long affair between Lord Elrond of Imladris and Gilraen the Fair as they raise Aragorn II, or Estel, the tearaway little miscreant and heir-in-exile to the Gondorian throne. Or: musings on the surveilled, sexually suspect citizenship that cities of sanctuary offer to those seeking asylum behind their walls.
