“No.” Ryan raised his hands, avoiding Dylan’s convincing smile. “No, absolutely not.”
“Come on, I’m tired of swimming in the gross-ass lake. It smells like literal butt.” Dylan whined.
“Yeah, come on.” Nick jumped in. “He’ll never notice.”
“How can you ignore a guy with that accent?” Dylan asked, cocking his head and giving Ryan a theatrical wave of his hand.

i’m so hard rnRyan’s phone does slip out of his hands and hits him in the face. He picks it back up with a groan, and deletes the unbelievably eloquent “jbkj” his nose managed to type upon contact. Squinting, he reads the message sitting patiently on his screen once, twice, five times in as row, just in case he’s too delirious to put the letters in the right order.
As his eyes trace over the words for the sixth time, Ryan sucks in a breath. That is exactly what it says. Okay. He can be normal about that.

Ryan’s head hasn’t stopped swimming with thoughts– he wants to say so much, and ask so many questions, even if he’s scared of the answers. More than anything, he wants to apologize profusely. But what he thinks about now is the inevitable dread of splitting up to their houses when they get back– the cold night and colder house with people who don’t speak to him before he goes to bed anymore.
He thinks back to the mill. He doesn’t know if anything will ever be like that again.
Plus, Naim’s gaze puts any coherent thoughts out of his head. Naim’s gaze darting to his lips, and back, and moving towards him feels like some siren call. And he's not really well equipped to deal with resisting that.
Or: The hospital scene + the bus scene, but from Ryan’s point of view.

Naim takes a shaky step forward, and Ryan’s hand reaches out to steady him like it’s second nature. There are so many things that Naim wants to say, but can't because the words are stuck in his throat, like the entity's fist shoved them down to the point of unspeakability. His thoughts are overlapping and restless, and his head buzzes with incessant white noise. He opens his mouth to say something, gaping like a fish, and then closes it.
I love you, he thinks.
“I’m sorry,” Naim says instead, because that sounds about right.
OR, the one time naim dreams of reconciliation, and the one time it’s real.

Naim fought to keep his face neutral, hoping his hesitancy—and irritation—wasn’t showing. He could deal with this, surely. As long as his mom doesn’t bring up the fact that Naim lied about being friends with Ryan—
“I’m just so glad Ryan and Naim are friends now!”
Fuck.
“Oh, are they?” Ryan’s dad asked politely, glancing at his son with warm eyes. “Ryan didn’t mention it, but he’s always been rather quiet. You know, teenagers—I’m sure you understand, Arlene.”
“Of course,” Naim’s mom replied with a smile. “They talked about school—right, Ryan? Maths, Naim said it was.”
Ryan, all of a sudden, seemed ten times more engaged in the conversation—looking between Naim and his mom with his eyebrows slightly raised.
“Yeah,” Ryan replied, his stupid blue eyes practically glowing with amusement. He glanced at Naim, a small smirk plastered on his face. “Naim really doesn’t like polynomials.”
