Fresh off of several stacked events to fit them into a weekend–because Shane’s mom is nothing if not efficient when it comes to the deals she makes–Ilya got home only a few minutes ago, still in the outfit he’d left his Buzzfeed puppy interview in, which Anya had clearly not appreciated, sniffing him suspiciously after her initial excited greeting and then retreating to Shane immediately when he patted his thigh in welcome.
Shane is trying not to be obviously enjoying Ilya’s turmoil as much as he is, shifting Anya to lay on her back like a baby in one arm and cooing at her.
“I know, huh? Papa left and played with who knows how many other dogs, and the whole time you were here missing him. I bet he wasn’t even thinking about you, huh?”
“Hollander!” Ilya says, sounding scandalized. “Do not tell her that! Is not true!”

Summary
His cottage is devoid of life, hollow of any signs of people. Water droplets drum against the glass panes facing the lake, the low, thick clouds oppressive as the sheets of rain obscure any view past the edge of his dock. It only adds to the feeling of loss, the echo of a misfit strung tight through his veins.
Inside his foyer, he can smell the fading scents of his parents, the stale air of a building that's been closed up for seasons, and the sharp, acrid scent of a loneliness that's clung under the skin since before he became an adult; one that's strong enough he's leaving traces of it behind.
It's a familiar one, a tinge that's clung underneath his normal neutral redolence of the muted tart bite of a haskap berry, oak, and the edge of winter snow that's seeped from his pores since he touched his first pair of skates. The taste of bitterness in the air that makes him grateful and angry and so fucking sad that it's been a part of his life since he was seventeen years old.
OR: After the attempted duo photoshoot that ended with Shane walking out, he finds himself at his cottage, three weeks before the 2014 Stanley Cup finals.

Ilya is the captain, so if anything, he should be holding the leash. In English, you can be singular or plural, but he knows what Svensson is trying to say. He is saying Ilya Rozanov, you are Hollander’s bitch.
“Only sometimes,” Ilya replies, grinning. He wins the face off.

The problem with this decision—the one sleeping in Ilya’s lap, drooling all over the crotch of his shorts—was that both options felt inevitable and also like Ilya would die if he chose them. Shane slept so little already, especially now that the season had started, avoiding the bed and pretending like it wasn’t because he was scared of the next day, of stepping out of their house in a world which he couldn’t yet use routine and familiarity to stumble his way through. Ilya’d had to work so hard to get him to nap. Hands in his hair, petting, cheek pressed to Ilya’s stomach where the smell of him was strongest, phone silent and in the other room for good measure.
But, also, Shane had shifted during sleep, scrunched up his beautiful face and curled on on himself so his head was resting fully in Ilya’s lap, sending hot puffs of air over Ilya’s dick with every breath. Even through his shorts it was gorgeous, excruciating, and Ilya screwed his eyes shut tight and thought about the penalty kill and still got so hard he held his own breath in the hope that Shane wouldn’t notice.
