It’s rituals you don’t understand but can’t bear to forego, because you just know that if you don’t keep them, something terrible will happen. It’s a hundred little coping mechanisms, each one more desperate and pathetic than the last. It’s falling to pieces when one of them fails.
There’s no such thing as a perfect victim. But even if there was, she knows she wouldn’t be one.

Alan appreciates the effort, though he lingers in the doorway and only belatedly thinks to step aside and let Ted into the penthouse. It’s hard to tell how much he knows.
