Something feral and wounded recoils in Megumi’s gut at the words, the same animal hunger that has always lived between them now fused with terror – because Yuuji is right, because every late-night fuck has been a bandage over a wound that only tears anew, because the fear of needing this –of needing Yuuji– has become a constant scream that Megumi drowns out with the brutal rhythm of hips and hands and the wet heat that makes him forget, for precious seconds, that he is already lost.
“Yeah,” he spits out, the corner of his lip curling into something cruel and ugly, a defensive snarl born of cornered desperation that twists his features in the low light, “and you don’t know how to do anything but bend over for it, so what the fuck does that say about you, Yuuji?”

The universe had never, ever been kind to Fushiguro Megumi. Very determined to keep him from being loved, it seems. First it took his parents away. Then it took his sister away.
Megumi doesn't care, he says. So be it, he says, as he trains endlessly, part of his deal with Gojo-sensei; to sing, to dance, to entertain. But it's all quite empty - Nobara pokes at him for being soulless, "the type of guy to set fire on oily seagulls!" Basically, there's no 'love' in his work.
Until he meets (and end up recruiting) Itadori Yuuji, a convenience store clerk with a ridiculously warm smile and beautiful singing voice. He's familiar. That moment, Megumi feels everything click into place - he's finally found a reason to love. They now move as a unit - him, Yuuji and Nobara - and nothing feels more right.
Until it isn't. Until Yuuji's choking on the floor, pain wracking through his body. Until Yuuji admits he's living on borrowed time and it's almost the end. "I just wanted to see you smile, Fushiguro."

For a while, they eat and watch in silence. And when they finish eating, Megumi drags the blanket over the both of them because Yuuji gets cold but never says anything about it. The couple on the screen are having their first kiss in the rain and Megumi glances at Yuuji out of the corner of his eye.
His head is slumped against Megumi’s shoulder, his breathing even and his gaze unmoving. Megumi thinks of kissing him on his doorstep after a date. Squashes the thought as quickly as it comes.
“Hey, Megumi?” he grunts in answer, rubbing his cheek against the spike of Yuuji’s hair. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For always looking after me.” Yuuji laughs and Megumi can’t look at him when Yuuji looks up at him through his lashes.
The Bluelight of the TV makes his eyes shine. Megumi hopes the rabbit thud of his heart isn’t loud enough to hear.
