    Summary

Another gust blew by, whistling in Edwin’s ears through the tiny holes in his knit hat. In the faintest whisper, the wind spoke in a commanding rasp that prickled up Edwin’s spine. “It’s time to give it back.”

Edwin grasped onto the arm of Charles’ coat before he could take another step forward. “Edwin?” Charles said, glancing back.

Against his better judgement, Edwin ignored Charles and took the bait. “Give what back?”

“It was never yours to keep.”

Or, sometimes you escape Hell, inexplicably turn up alive, and make a peaceful life for yourself and your best mate in a little village on the coast of Wales. It's hard to know what's more aggravating for Edwin--that Hell has come knocking again, or that all of a sudden he can't stop his heart from beating out of his chest whenever Charles catches his eye.

Edwin blinked back tears as he met Charles's eyes. "It occurs to me now that this looks suspiciously like a wedding ring," he managed unsteadily, a question buried underneath the words.

"So pretty and yet so sad." A voice cut through Edwin's melancholy and made him jump. "Ah, what I'd give to make you smile."

"I beg your pardon?" Edwin snapped, his shoulders turning and his eyes locking onto the speaker.

"I- I-" The boy in front of him stuttered. Boy may have an understatement, a simplification of who he was. Because he must, surely, have been the same age as Edwin. He was tall and slim wearing joggers that cut a little low and a top that cut high and exposed a centimeter of stomach that would send Edwin to the brink of madness if he stared at it for too long. He was beautiful. Not handsome or cute but the kind of beautiful that made you blink rapidly to see if it was a trick of the light. He was, also, staring at Edwin with growing horror and looked like he wished for nothing more than to disappear completely. "I did not think you could hear me."

    Summary

“You are injured,” Edwin observed aloud.

“Always am, mate,” Charles huffed, then brought a hand to his ribs where a jolt of pain shot through him. Part of him hoped Edwin would just leave it at that today.

For how close they were in their positions on the plush bed, Edwin was still putting too much distance between them again. He always did, when he could suss out that Charles had fresh bruises or cuts, as though he was scared that even the lightest touch would hurt Charles more.

Even if it did, Charles knew it would be a pain that he would gladly endure as long as it was Edwin who was touching him.

    “What happened?”

“Fell down the stairs,” Charles breathed out slowly, trying to keep up what little pretense he had left.

    Summary

“Edwin?”, Crystal asks, and Edwin would say something snarky, maybe even something mean, but Charles is wrapped around him like he’ll never let go again, and there are more important matters at hand.
“Crystal, what has happened here?”, he asks, and a few seconds later, their new psychic is standing in front of him, trousers splashed with the coffee she dropped, disbelief written across her face. “I was gone for a few hours and now Charles… and the whole building…”
He’s not quite sure how to put it, most likely because he still doesn’t understand, and Crystal looks at him like he come back from the Cat King’s lair with an additional head.
“Edwin”, she says, slowly, like she is still searching for the words, “what are you talking about? You’ve been gone for six weeks.”

    ____________

Edwin takes the Cat King up on his initial offer, so instead of a few hours, he is gone for six weeks.
Charles isn't good at coping with it.
