Loneliness was a creature with claws. It tore at him when he was still. It hollowed out his chest and filled him with ache.
He thought about the little boy again — the brief second of a smile, the wide-eyed curiosity. That flicker was enough to keep him moving forward. It had to be. But he knew, deep down, that the mother’s sharp tug and whispered warning was the truth of it. He was not someone a child could reach for without fear.
Not someone who could ever be welcomed as human.
The fire collapsed into ash. Vash closed his eyes, listening to the silence. The desert had no answers for him. It never did.

No Man’s Land was born thirsty. Denied rain, it drank whatever its people spilled, for innocence and guilt tasted alike in its parched mouth. Then the sky opened and gave the earth another answer to thirst—one that drew life not downward into the soil but upward from it. At last, it asked those still standing not what more they could give, but whether they might remain long enough to grow.
Vash and Wolfwood endured that appetite like everyone else, but when its thirst ran deepest, they were among those it held closest, and for years it fed upon them, fashioning them into instruments of its violence. Now the land may be learning a gentler season, but flesh is slower than soil to forget. After all, they carried not only what the world had done to them, but what it had done through them.

Roberto eyed the front door, taking a slow drink from his flask. “Are you sure this is the right spot, newbie?”
“It’s Meryl Stryfe,” she grumbled, double checking the address on her phone. “Yeah, this is apparently the right spot. It looks… different from what I was expecting.”
“If he’s skipping out on his taxes, he should have enough money to fix his coffee shop,” Roberto muttered.

“Sorry, Yoshiki,” Hikaru groans as tears come out of one eye and more of him comes out of the other. “Ughh, I don’t – ”
Yoshiki can see how hard he’s trying to calm himself down, but it just isn’t working.
“It’s ok,” Yoshiki says, quiet. “It’s ok. Instead of shovin’ it back inside completely, can you try just...lettin’ it out? Just a little bit?”
He has no clue how any of this works, but maybe a half-measure is better than trying to force it all at once.
“Okay,” Hikaru says, but it sounds like a sob. More of the unknowable, incomprehensible swirl leaks out into the dark room.
“Yoshiki – shit – ‘m sorry but can I…” Hikaru’s face – what’s visible behind the bloom of him – twists in a small kind of agony. “Can I touch you? Not much. Just – ”
It's been years since Hikaru first took the body of Yoshiki's dead best friend. Despite everything - every horror and hurt - they managed to find a home in each other. Not quite friends or family. More and not. What they have is complicated, but precious.
But when Yoshiki escapes their small town – to college, to Tokyo – Hikaru follows. And things start to change for them both.
