Summary
The Winter Soldier, fresh out of the Potomac River and vulnerable, is stalked by Rumlow’s team before he can successfully make his escape. Dubbing the monicker Crossbones, Rumlow uses his privileges as Field Handler to collect the Asset with the promise he won't return him to Hydra, which is enough to get the Soldier to go along with it.
Meanwhile, news from America reaches a certain EKO Commander who can't pass up the rare opportunity of the Soldier being loose from his captors. In true dramatic fashion, and self-interest, Zemo decides to up the stakes for his own devices. Too bad Hydra--choking on the ash of their covert empire--isn’t ready to let their cherished attack dog go. Just to add fuel to the fire, having a new unauthorized Sokovian handler in play certainly throws a wrench into everyone's plans.
As for the Asset. Sgt. Barnes. Bucky. James... He just wants to learn who he is after everything, without others' opinions dictating how he's expected to act. But no one-not Rumlow, Steve, the Avengers, and certainly not Helmut-fucking-Zemo make it easy for him.
And Hydra just won't stop sprouting damn heads.

Summary
When Bucky Barnes reverts to the Winter Soldier after a battle in New York with The Void he is captured and sent to the Raft. The Winter Soldier cannot be caged - even there. He escapes and he takes Helmut Zemo with him - without explanation. The mission, it seems, was given years ago - Zemo barely remembers issuing the order. But the Soldier does. Now, Zemo has been dragged into a perilous game with a HYDRA loyal Winter Soldier while trying to subtly bring forward James - Bucky - back to the surface.

He wanted to tell Sam that admitting to the truth was just as bad as confirming that Steve didn’t want him, that he had cared for Steve above everything and that Steve hadn’t afforded him the same courtesy. He wanted to tell Sam that no matter what words Bucky said, they would always be too tame for the way he felt about Steve, the way he had always felt. He wanted to tell Sam that he had always had Steve, as a child then as a teenager then as an adult, and for the first time ever he had to function without him, and it was ruining him day by day. But how could he? How could he do that, and be vulnerable again, without cracking for good?

A rewrite of episode four of TFATWS. Sam is just about fed up with Bucky using Steve as an excuse to be mopey and grumpy and get in the way of their job, and Bucky knows it's just because Sam doesn't understand. He wants Sam to understand. But he's unwilling to tell him anything.
Of course, as it becomes more and more of a problem, Sam might not give him a choice.Series
