Work Text:

The plane over to Egypt was a hell of his head-mate yelling and crying at him. Now not even the busy streets of Cairo could hide the faint sobbing coming from the mirror. No amount of booze that Marc drank was silencing Steven, who was now a constant annoyance of quiet sniffling.

Marc walked to the cracked mirror staring at the other version of himself. Steven looked small, swallowed by a comforter, tear-stained face looking at their shared bloodied fist. "You are a bad person mate and I hate what you make me do." Steven's voice came out weak and sad, holding his fist like it would fall off if he loosened slightly.

"You don't get to complain about what I do Steven!" Marc spat, taking another swig from his bottle."Why did this have to happen to me?" Steven began squishing his palms into his eyes.

"Oh yeah, your life was soooooo great. A man with no friends, talking to his goldfish and working part-time in a museum gift shop." Marc huffed out a laugh "Well formally."

The reflection shook as Steven stood up, "I liked my life, I liked my job, I liked me and what I don't like is that you're a psycho in a suit who kills people and that I kept bloody waking up who knows where!"

"I KILL BAD PEOPLE STEVEN THAT'S WHAT I HAVE TO DO!" Throwing his now empty bottle at the mirror. Steven flinched as small chunks of the mirror fell. Marc grabbed another bottle and turned back into the room, hoping that putting some distance between him and the mirror would stop his now constant companion. "At least we don't have to worry about you waking up clueless anymore because now you won't leave."

Time passed, a bottle drained and another opened but it still hadn't stopped the crying in his head. He was just planning on waiting out his time until Khonshu's orders came but that was now becoming incredibly hard. Marc didn't know how much longer he could handle having someone with him at all times. He had gotten used to Khonshu, he had to, but the longer Steven blubbered and mumbled, The closer Marc got to flinging himself out the hotel window.

After a good hour of sweet silence, a voice came like a piercing headache "Marc, what happened to Gus?" Marc tilted his head towards the mirror "What?" Steven's voice cracked as it raised "I said what happened to my fish?"

Marc groaned as he lifted off the floor, less out of stiffness instead out of having to hold a conversation with the one person he wished would shut up. "After coming back from the alps he was not moving at the bottom of the tank, he was dead I checked" pinching the bridge of his nose and letting out a breath walking closer to the mirror, "I thought goldfish were supposed to be hardy how did it die after two days?"

"He was a living creature, you don't even care he died" Steven's accusatory eyes bore into Marc. "He was a fish Steven, a fish!" Marc sounded more defensive than he meant, he wasn't a monster but Steven losing his mind over a fish was making him feel like one. "A fish who I cared for and loved but of course, you don't care about that, a fish is nothing compared to the rest of the things you've killed"

Marc came forward grabbing both sides of the mirror getting as close to his reflection as he could. "Steven, I swear I will kill us both if you don't get off your high horse, I am Khonshu's will on earth. There is nothing you or I can do to change that. I don't take joy in killing bad people but I'm not upset that I'm out there stopping the unjust"

Tears started to well back up in Steven's eyes "I'm confused and scared Marc, my whole life was ripped out from under me and I'm being flooded with information that I can't handle" Steven's head was hanging low bringing his palms to squeeze at his temples and fingers trying their hardest to dig into his brain.

Marc set himself on the edge of the bed mirroring Steven "I know this is hard but it's not going to get any better if we're both angry. This isn't fair and this isn't okay but there is nothing we can do. We just need to do what we can to make this the best for the both of us." Steven's hands slip from his head looking to Marc. "The stuff we are away to do you aren't going to like Steven but I promise to keep us safe and that's the best I can do." He got a weak nod from the tearful man. Marc showed Steven a weak smile hoping that would ease him. He was going to try his hardest to keep his head-mate safe but his confidence wavered 'I can't keep lying to him' he desperately needed to rest, slowly falling back onto the bed closing his eyes.

"Marc you are needed."
Khonshu appeared next to the bed ruining the small chance of peace Marc had gotten. "Get dressed and ready to leave now"
Marc sat up without a sound getting his clothes on "Ugh he's still around." Marc looked up at the god "Yes my lord but he won't interfere again I promise." Khonshu's head tilted down taking a hand to Marc's chin forcing his face up. "Marc your promises are starting to mean less and less, you need to prove it."

"Of course my lord."
