A List of Things Zoro and Nami Owe Each Other:

Summary:

But mainly Zoro, let's be honest here.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

One: a good punch in the face.

Nami couldn’t let her hands tremble. They had to be icily still, just like the rest of her. If there was any justice in the world, the swordsman would have been struck down where he stood.

Nami knew better than to think there was justice in the world- but it didn’t stop her from trying to glare another hole into the swordsman’s chest.

Did he get that at the Baratie? Or did he pick a needless fight with some of those damn fishman…

At the moment, it doesn’t matter. Every gulp of Arlong Park air he takes endangers Nojiko. Endangers Genzo. Hurts Belle-mere.

Nami needs to get him out of there, no matter the cost. To him, to her, to anyone else.

Two: Three times interest

He spends most of the day whining to himself about how unfair this is. He attempted to whine to other crew members too, but his head aches from the resulting kick.

He chokes words like ‘ungrateful witch’ and ‘after all I did for you’ down in his throat. (He doesn’t really mean them)

It is her money, for the first time in years, so of course it's her right to do what she wants with it!

It shouldn’t hurt Zoro that she still sees him as a means to an end. That his crewmate lacks honor.

In that moment, he figures out that he hoped their relationship would change after he beat the stupid octopus.

He brushes the thought aside: Nami will never be a priority in his life. Especially not when he can’t walk through this town without seeing the face of a dead girl.

Three: A jacket

When you pack for a trip to one of the world’s hottest deserts, a warm coat isn’t the first thing on your list of things to pack. Really, Nami should have known that deserts get frigid at night-she’s spent ages admiring maps of them. Of course, it doesn’t compare to the heat and chill of the real thing.

She wants to blame Luffy for destroying her best coat, but really, this is her own damn fault.

She spends most of the night shivering, before something is roughly tossed in her face.

The smell engulfs her. Were she feeling less grateful, she’d make a mock gag. She mutters to herself about Sanji needing to shower more often.

She wakes up to a shirtless Zoro snoring without a care in the world. She can’t believe she finds this endearing.

Four: Sparring lessons

“Now that you’ve officially fought someone…” He tries hard to keep his tone level. He feels like he lost his dignity somewhere in the East Blue.

“You are going to go up against me.”

Nami’s eye’s narrowed, “Absolutely not!”

“It's a crew thing. You saw me train Usopp.”

“What I saw, was Usopp's injuries after you were done with him! He had bruises for weeks!”

“He tried to fight me in a fair fight.”

Nami cracks a grin.

“Okay then. So if I beat you, I get left alone?”

Zoro’s eyes widened.
_____________

She held the record for a solid three weeks, until Robin won in under five seconds by threatening to break his neck.

Five: A date.

The witch is screaming at him. It doesn’t really matter, because they need to get to the Sunny, now. Zoro didn’t get most of the details, something about an ex-crewmate of Robin’s.

He grabs Nami by her shoulder, and startles a bit at the roughness around her tattoo. Concern was written all over the face of the man she was seated with. At least, until Nami flashes her trademark grin and asks (more like demands) him to foot the bill.

Zoro looks the guy over. He’s small, with dusty brown hair. He doubts that someone like that would be capable of cashing in Nami’s bounty- but he worries nonetheless.

As it stands, he probably has bigger things to worry about, considering she’s pulling on his ear and yelling something about her log pose.

He finally tunes in again on the way out of the restaurant, because she finally said something worth listening to. “You owe me another date! That was a three-star restaurant, and I’ll tell the cook you barged in there without a fucking care!”

“Yeah, okay.” He mentally adds ‘witch’ to the end of his sentence. “Next island, then.”

Her screams of frustration can be heard for miles.

Notes:

I will die with the headcanon that Zoro trains the rest of the crew, and that everyone has to beat him in a fight. Also, whoever leaves the crew has to do it twice.

First time really writing Zoro. Hopefully I did okay.
