Sherlock Holmes
Stood in the pouring rain, pelting onto everything in sight. The dilapidated umbrella dripping and shaking violently, huddled together; John Watson and Sherlock Holmes with arms around each other. Adrenaline still pumping harshly throughout both of their veins, their legs aching after running after a suspected murderer. Mud splattered over both of their trouser legs. Watson huffed pulling his silver pocket watch out of his breast pocket, the time being 2300 hours. The train they had supposed to be on had been severely delayed, now they were stuck in torrential storm until the train arrived.
The sudden screech of a steam locomotive imminently lifted both of the gentlemen’s spirits. “At last our hopes and prayers have been answered.” spoke Watson a smile pulling at the corners of his lips; Holmes gave a slight low hum in response.
After stepping onto the train, the carriage door swinging closed silently behind them. The seats slightly huffing as the luggage and detectives settled down. Sitting opposite on another, Watson subtly entangled their legs together comfortably. “We’ve had quite an exhilarating adventure; don’t you agree Watson?” Holmes spoke gently shifting around the seats. Watson chuckled in response “My thoughts exactly my dear fellow, I’m am quite exhausted after all that palava. I fear I may collapse once we arrive home.”
The ride was much shorter than expected, and before they knew it the wooden door to 221B was opened and home they were.
Watson immediately threw spare fire wood into the fire place, before setting alight some small fuel and quickly throwing it into the middle of the logs. After that both men changed into nightwear. Holmes sat in fetal position on his armchair, a cigarette between his fingers, the end reduced to ashes. Watson had already gone up to his own room, absolutely stricken with exhaustion; he’d quite literally passed out on his bed snoring softly.
For hours Holmes sat trying desperately to let the darkness of sleep consume him, failing every single time. His mind was running a mile an hour, thoughts running around in circles. Deeply inhaling through his nostrils Holmes stood straight and stiffly, striding through the corridor and skipping several steps as he went. He slowly opened the door to Watson’s room spotting a human shaped lump underneath the covers. Holmes surged forward towards the bed, pulling back the duvet and slipped down besides Watson. Unlike Holmes who was always cold, fingertips like ice; Watson was the opposite, his body radiated heat and comfort. Watson’s eyelids fluttered softly before his eyes opened fully, landing on Holmes’ dark eyes. Watson’s eyes softened and his pupils dilatated largely. “Holmes…” The corner of Holmes’s lips twitched slightly with the ghost of a smile. “You’re absolutely freezing” Watson spoke shifting away from the other man in the bed. “And you are warm, you should share with me then” Holmes spoke with a sly grin, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
