prologue

Summary:

In every universe, he has his girls.

Sometimes, he gets to keep Her through it all. Sometimes, time is not on their side.

Sometimes, She’s already grown and bitter, scowling at him as she fires no end of retorts. Sometimes, she’s fresh into the world and screaming as she works her way around new lungs. Sometimes, she’s squirming as she tries to get comfortable in his arms and sometimes, she looks at him with brand new eyes like he hung the moon and stars for her.

Sometimes he’s broken and harsh, but sometimes he’s soft and familiar. Sometimes he has them both together, sometimes years apart. Regardless, fate always brings them to him.

He has them both every time. He loves Her in every universe, and it’s always because of Sarah.

(or this is just a prologue to a whole collection. Don’t judge the word count. I had to write my own happy endings. mostly)

Notes:

I had so many Ideas and I have to put them somewhere so enjoy my rambling

Again, this is literally just a prologue. I promise the actual AUs themselves are more than two paragraphs long.

Work Text:

It is 2013, and his little girl dies. He’s holding her as the world shatters around them and Tommy is there but Sarah is not. Not really. Her eyes are glazed over and her body is limp and all he can do is blink through the tears enough to see her clearly before Tommy covers her completely in their makeshift grave. His daughter doesn’t even have a grave, fuck. He failed her.

And then somehow he gets a second chance. It makes him feel sick at first, when the universe decides to prove it to him that he can actually save his children, but he just couldn’t save Sarah. He wants to hold her again, wants to protect her, but he can’t. She’s gone. But Ellie isn’t. And the universe just keeps making things worse for her. And he’s angry. So angry. He wants to scream, he wants to break, he wants to cry. He wants to do all of that. But she’s lying there unconscious and so different and somehow identical to Sarah that he almost vomits before he can get to her and he will not lose another daughter. So he does what he has to do.

It is 2034, and his little girl lives.

But you know that story.
