Work Text:
It is 2013, and his little girl dies. He’s holding her as the world shatters around them and Tommy is there but Sarah is not. Not really. Her eyes are glazed over and her body is limp and all he can do is blink through the tears enough to see her clearly before Tommy covers her completely in their makeshift grave. His daughter doesn’t even have a grave, fuck. He failed her.
And then somehow he gets a second chance. It makes him feel sick at first, when the universe decides to prove it to him that he can actually save his children, but he just couldn’t save Sarah. He wants to hold her again, wants to protect her, but he can’t. She’s gone. But Ellie isn’t. And the universe just keeps making things worse for her. And he’s angry. So angry. He wants to scream, he wants to break, he wants to cry. He wants to do all of that. But she’s lying there unconscious and so different and somehow identical to Sarah that he almost vomits before he can get to her and he will not lose another daughter. So he does what he has to do.
It is 2034, and his little girl lives.
But you know that story.
