Work Text:
Eddie woke up alone that morning, and it felt strange. He’d gotten used to waking up in his own bed with Buck tangled around him like an octopus every morning that they weren’t at work. Ever since that day Buck had picked up Christopher, he could count on one hand the number of times that Buck had gone back to his loft. And even then it was just to pick up a few things and then back again in time to say goodnight to Chris.
Sleepily pulling on a clean pair of boxers, sweats and a tank top, he stumbled out of the bedroom and followed the smell of coffee and eggs down the corridor. Standing in the doorway for a second, he smiled as Buck buttered toast and sang off-key to some Taylor Swift song that he’d been obsessed with the past few weeks.
But what would you do if I went to touch you now?
What would you do if they never found us out?
What would you do if we never made a sound?
Silently, Eddie slinked over to Buck and wrapped his arms around his waist, pressing his chest to Buck’s bare back.
“Hey, you never woke me up.” He murmured into Buck’s ear before planting a kiss on his neck, making him involuntarily shudder.
“Looked like you needed the sleep. And besides, what kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn’t let my man sleep in on his birthday?” He replied, still trying to concentrate on the knife in his hand. “Didn’t think I’d forgotten, did you?” To be honest, Eddie had almost forgotten himself. They’d just been so busy lately. Plus, he never really celebrated anyway, hadn’t done since he was ten. Until he’d moved to LA, they were just another day. As soon as Buck had learned when his birthday was, he tried to make it special, inviting everyone out to celebrate, but Eddie just wasn’t used to it. After a couple of years of that, he’d asked him to stop. So now their annual tradition was dinner, a bar and then home. Nothing special. Eddie would have preferred to just stay at home, but Buck insisted, and God knows he hated letting that man down, so he went along with it.
“So, tonight, I’ve made dinner reservations at your favourite restaurant, followed by cocktails, and then back home at a decent hour – mainly because I don’t trust your son not to throw a massive party while we’re away.” Buck murmured before turning around, pressing his chest to Eddie’s, not even a slither of light passing between them, and brushing his lips lightly against his boyfriend's.
“Me neither.” Eddie mumbled back as he pulled away. “Is that all you’ve got planned?”
“Well, birthday boy, you might get an extra treat when we get home if you’re good.” Buck whispered, aware that Christopher could get up at any time, and he was sure neither of them wanted to discuss that with the teenager there. “But first, move back.” He ordered, and Eddie rolled his eyes, but took a step back to let Buck move from the counter, then watched as he produced a huge gift bag from under the sink. “Presents!” He grinned, sitting it on the island.
“Buck, I said you didn’t have to...”
“Yeah, but I did.” He grinned. “It’s your first birthday as my boyfriend, and you deserve the full ‘boyfriend Buck’ experience. So shut up, open your presents and stop complaining.” Eddie rolled his eyes playfully but started to work on the pile in front of him. Buck had bought far too much, and probably spent far too much, but the look in Buck’s eyes reminded him that he wasn’t allowed to argue. So, he settled on a hug instead. Pulling back, he saw a confused look on Buck’s face as he looked at each gift in turn. “I...I forgot something.” He eventually said. “Wait there.” Eddie did as he was told while Buck rushed off towards their room, coming back a few seconds later empty-handed.
“Buck, it’s fine.” Eddie smiled fondly. Really, Buck had done so much, plus they were going out on a date later (which he knew that he would insist on paying for, because “birthday boys don’t pay for their own birthday dinner”), and he felt completely and utterly spoiled for the first time in... well, a long time.
“No, it’s not. I had something really special and now I’ve...” He trailed off, and patting the pocket of his sweats, he let out a breath. “Oh, never mind, I found it.” He grinned and dived his hand into his pocket, and in one swift move, he knelt on the floor on one knee and pulled out the blue velvet box he’d hidden weeks ago. Eddie heard himself gasp as Buck took his left hand and stared up at him with those shining blue eyes. “I was gonna do this tonight, but you just look so beautiful that I had to right now. Eddie Diaz, you...you are the love of my life, and I’m sorry it took me so long to realise that. But I want to put that right, because I want to spend the rest of my life proving to you how much I love you. I never want to spend another day apart from you, because you are my partner, my one true love, my soulmate. I promised seven years ago that I’d have your back no matter what, and right now, I’m promising it again. Eddie Diaz, will you please marry me?” He felt tears prick his eyes, and looking up into Eddie’s, he saw his eyes were shining too.
“Yes.” Eddie whispered softly, and at that, Buck slid the ring on his finger. As soon as it was secure, he helped Buck to his feet and wrapped his arms around him, resting his head on Buck’s shoulder. “I love you so much. But wait there.” He ordered, echoing Buck’s words from a few moments ago. Running off, he appeared back a few seconds later with a matching blue box and took Buck’s hand in his.
“My turn now.” He whispered, dropping to the floor. “Evan, I...I don’t even know what to say. Except I love you too, and I want you to be a part of this family forever. The three of us, together. I want to stand up in front of our family and friends and tell the world that we belong together. I want to wake up with you every morning and fall asleep in your arms every night. I want to grow old with you. I want to...I want to be yours forever.” He finished as he slid his completely identical ring onto Buck’s finger. “I was going to do this weeks ago, but I thought you weren’t ready, and I didn’t want to rush you.” He admitted as he stood up.
“I know. I thought I wasn’t ready either, but then some kid told me that we’d been together for seven years, and I figured that was long enough.” Buck smiled.
“Smart kid.” Eddie replied as he leaned in for another kiss. “We should thank him.”
“Thank me by not making out in the kitchen?” Christopher’s voice came from the doorway. “Other people have to live here too, you know.” He huffed, and Buck sniggered as he laid his head on Eddie’s shoulder. “But, you know, congratulations and all that.” He said as he grabbed a plate of scrambled egg, threw some toast on top and sat at the kitchen island. “And on your seven-year, two-month anniversary too. You guys don’t hang about, do you?” Eddie raised his eyebrows, but Christopher just gave him a grin and shovelled his breakfast into his mouth, satisfied that their family was going to be officially complete. Finally.
