Regulus and James are together behind the scenes of their fame, and the Marauders go on with a little surprise during their London show during their Wildest Dreams tour. Said surprise being a special guest that turns out to be Regulus and a couple sweet love songs.

Notes:

From what I know of playing violin, I’m sure it’s incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to sing while playing something like the cello, but I wanted James to play the cello and they needed to be the one that sang it. Ignore that fallacy.

The songs that they play is, in order, Rule #33 - Pyre and Rule #2 - Moonlight, both by Fish in a Birdcage. The title is from the second. Also, just for a reference with the difference, I always think of the Marauders as a band being like Palaye Royale.

“Look at us,” James smiles, leaning over to show their phone to Regulus, “Trending online together.”

“Why am I trending?”

“Because you’re fucking beautiful.” They hum, showing him a picture that someone had taken at his most recent performance -- even if they shouldn’t have had their phone out in the first place -- and he’s gorgeous. His eyes closed and his shoulders relaxed, his fingers pressed confidently against the strings and a soft smile on his face as he moves the bow, “I can’t wait to see the recording of this one, I’m sorry that I couldn’t be there.”

Regulus smiles softly at them, “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you.”

“It’s alright,” they shake their head, “You’ll be at my next one, won’t you?”

“I have no choice.”

“Don’t act like that.” James hums, leaning into his body to rest their head on his shoulder, “You’re excited about it.”

“I get to see you playing the cello, something you never do in front of me,” Regulus finally gives in, “Of course I’m excited for it.”

“I see how it is.”

Regulus grins at them, “And what about you, are you excited to perform with me?”

“I’m fucking thrilled, baby.” James smiles, sitting up just a bit to press a feather-light kiss to Regulus’ cheek before going back to resting their head on his shoulder, “What do you think the fans will think?”

He hums, “I think our fan bases are going to have very different reactions.”

“Yeah?”

Regulus nods, “I mean, think about it. A lot of my fan base are the elderly and teenagers that are weirdly obsessed with my appearance, I could see a lot of the people that like me being rather upset that I’m, one, dating someone, and two, dating someone that’s not a woman, let alone a nonbinary person.” He reaches up to run his fingers through their hair, “But your fan base is… young people who are also kind of obsessed with your looks, but are also more open due to the genre that you play in. I think there will be a lot of people who will be upset, but most will be excited.”

“And what about the people that like both of us?”

“I’d hope they’ll be over the moon, then.” Regulus hums, leaning his own head onto theirs.

“You guys are on in ten minutes.” Frank says as he peeks into the room, “Everything is set up, James’ cello is sitting stage right in the wings so watch out for that. Regulus' violin and stand are in the same place.”

“Thanks Frank!” James calls as the man backs out of the room, watching as his wife does Regulus' makeup. Sirius is curled up on the vanity in the corner, holding his eyes down to rub at his waterline with the shitty black eyeliner he has, having just finished up with Remus’ makeup. James themself is dabbing some red around their eyes, their own eyeliner sitting just beside them.

Alice moves away from Regulus after finishing up with him, moving to put some corrective makeup on Pete and allowing Regulus to wander over to his partner. James smiles at him in the mirror, taking a second to take in his appearance.

Much unlike the band themselves, he’s wearing more formal clothes, something that he would wear to a symphony that he were performing in and his makeup, while there is some black around his eyes to make them pop and a bit of blush on his cheeks, is much more modest than Sirius, Remus, and James’. It’s soft and inviting and utterly professional. James laughs as they move to pick up their eyeliner pencil, “Don’t we make quite the couple?”

Regulus smiles softly, making James’ heart light up, and wraps his arms gently around their bare waist -- they’ve found that they rather like wearing cropped and ripped shirts, it pairs well with the pretty red plaid skater skirt that they’re wearing tonight -- and humming, “I feel like this is how everyone that knows us sees us.”

“You’re not far off,” Remus hums, not turning to look at them. James huffs a laugh but doesn’t say anything for the sake of focusing on their makeup.

After a couple minutes of silence, Frank calls for five minutes and the band is finishing up with everything, getting ready to head towards the stage. Standing on the sidelines while the pre-show band finishes up, James leans over and presses their mouth to Regulus’ curls, “Are you ready for this?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be.”

“You seem more nervous than usual before going on stage.”

“This is a very different crowd than I’m used to performing for.”

James smiles down at him, turning their bodies just a bit to lean down and press a kiss to Regulus’ lips, pulling away after a second, “You’ll do amazing, my love. Just relax and let it come to you like it always does.”

Regulus nods, watching as Sirius goes out onto the dark stage and moves to pick up his guitar, “You’ll let me know when I need to get out there?”

“You’ll know,” they wink as Remus follows after Sirius and grabs his own guitar. Regulus kisses them a final time as Pete walks out and settles at the drum set. Soon after, James runs out as the lights on stage turn back on to reveal the band in all their glory. They make it to their mic and take it into their hands, “What’s good London?” They shout into the mic, smiling at the roaring crowd that responds to them, letting out a small laugh, “This is going to be a damn good crowd tonight.”

They ramble on for a couple more minutes before they start performing. The show goes incredibly, and before James knows it, they’re getting to their last song of he night before Regulus comes out. And when that finishes, James goes up, sweaty and panting, to the mic and smiles into it, “This has been lovely!” They wait for the crowd to die down just a bit before they grin directly into one of the cameras, “Now, I said that we had a little surprise for you all tonight, and it’ll take us a minute or two to set up, so just… just wait a bit.” And with that, the lights go out.

During the black out, Sirius brings out his keyboard and Remus switches out from his acoustic guitar. James goes backstage to grab Regulus, who has his violin pulled out and his stand set up, which he grabs and goes out with them. Shortly after that, one of their crew brings out James’ cello and a stand for them as well. James takes a couple seconds to readjust the mic stand to make sure that it sits right where they’re sitting while others of their crew move a mic to be able to hear the violin and cello better. Sirius and Remus readjust their own mics and Regulus goes backstage for a more dramatic reveal before the lights come back up.

The crowd’s responding scream is ear shattering, and James laughs. They settle their cello between their thighs and motion for the crowd to die down. When it does, they laugh gently into the camera, “I know that this isn’t our usual form of music or performance, but we have a little something that we want to show you guys.”

They cast their gaze backstage, gesturing for Regulus to come out, “I have someone special that I think some of you will know and we were thinking that it was about time for you to meet him.” And at their words, Regulus comes strolling out from backstage, smiling gently but also clearly focusing on his journey to his chair. The crowd roars as Regulus sits down, taking up his violin and settles it on his lap.

James takes a second to tear his gaze from him, but eventually they face the crowd, “With us here today, is Regulus Black, the famous violinist. He has been the most wonderful person and agreed to write a couple songs with me, which will be released in its own EP later.” They turn to look at Regulus and hum, “Ready?” Regulus nods and gently brings his violin to his collarbone, James doing the same and settling their bow on their cello strings.

James counts them all in before they, Regulus, and Remus begin playing, playing for a moment before James begins singing, “When I looked in your eyes, I said I know you’ll be fine. It’s not for me to decide what you do with your life.” Sirius leans into the mic from where he’s standing there, joining James on the next lyrics, “See that rests on you, you’ll feel what to do. Trust yourself and live it your way.”

Sirius fades his voice off, smiling at the two performing front and center of the stage. James can’t take their eyes off their boyfriend, having practiced this song with Regulus so much that neither of them really need the sheet music in front of them, “See, I’ve made mistakes and it was never a waste, because you are right here and you’ll persevere through the mud and the storms.”

Regulus takes a deep breath when he resets his bow and it’s incredibly distracting, “This is why you were born, trust yourself and live it your way. Lord knows I’ve tried to be who you look to,” at those words, Regulus turns to meet their gaze, and James knows that there’s a crowd around them, but they can’t hear anyone other than the two of them and the sound drifting from Remus’ guitar, “when all the light burns out my pyre.”

Regulus mouths the next words right back to James, “Through every inch of these bones, I need you to know I’ve felt the warmth. Your passion, your fire. The movements you chose has kept me inspired.” The next part of the song is just instrumentals, and James watches as Regulus’ shoulders relax and his eyes slip close once again. His entire body moves with the movement of his bow and he looks…

James forces themself to focus on their own playing, though they keep looking at their boyfriend. They adore when he lets them watch him this close, as it normally distracts him if he’s not performing. Before they even know it, the last bar of just instrumentals passes and James takes a deep breath, repeating the same lyrics as before. They’re sure that they can hear Remus and they know that Pete is somewhere beating his hands against his stool but they can’t hear anything. They can barely hear their own voice.

Then the last word has slipped from James’ lips and the song finishes after another bout of their instrumentals, and they’re broken out of their dazed reverie when Regulus opens his eyes once again and puts his violin in his lap gently, holding onto the neck.

It’s only then that they hear the roaring cheers of the crowd around them, it’s only then that they remember they’re on stage performing for thousands of people. Professing their love to the most wonderful man on Earth in front of their fans. They blink a couple times and take a deep breath, finally turning to see the crowd.

They lick their lips and lean further towards the mic, “How was that everyone?” They’re sure that their voice is too soft for how they normally address their crowds, but they’re met with screaming nonetheless. They see Regulus smile gently in the corner of their eye and suddenly feel more breathless than they have the entire concert, despite their jumping around and singing.

After a couple seconds, they laugh, “Good to know you don’t mind a genre change,” more screams, “We’ll be playing one more song for you before we’ll have to say goodnight for now. This last one was something that I wrote when we were in America and Regulus was out in France. Are you all ready?” The crowd once again screams and the band once more gets into their places.

Sirius starts them off on the keyboard this time, and James closes their eyes to take a couple deep breaths, starting gently, “Finally broke down. Houston, please come in, there’s someone that I need to talk to.” They turn to Regulus, “Honey, how have you been? I miss you, my dear. There’s something that I have to say.”

Remus starts playing and they smile gently, “All I need is to come home to you. All I want is to be close to you. All I need is to come home to you. All I want is to be with you.” After those words fall into the mic, James and Regulus put bows to strings and begin playing, Remus joining in with them gently.

It’s not long until James continues, “It’s good to hear your voice. I’ll tell you what the world looks like from up here. There’s hurricanes, and blizzards too. Please stay safe and warm ‘til I get to you.” Regulus opens his eyes and smiles at him, mouthing the words once more, “All I need is to come home to you. All I want is to be close to you. All I need is to come home to you.” The next part is a violin solo, and James watches as Regulus’ eyes slip close once more, hoping that they’ll stay that way.

It’s just Regulus’ beautiful playing and James’ voice now, and they hope their voice isn’t shaking too much, “Oh my dear, will you believe in me?” Peter is stepping forward from the drumset towards James, “Can you see the moon lit up above.” James gently takes the bow from their cello and hands it to him, “I’m here for you if you want me to,” they take the mic, “be the attention of your love.”

They close the small gap between their chair and where Regulus is playing and they vaguely register Pete putting their cello on the ground gently, “All I need is to come home to you. All I want is to be close to you.” They slip the box from their pocket that’s been sitting there all concert. “All I need is to come home to you.” They get down on one knee, and the crowd roars.

A deep breath, “All I want is to be with you.” The violin fades out with their words and finally Regulus lets his violin drop with a gentle sigh, eyes opening. It’s only then that he notices James at his side. Sirius has move to gently take Regulus’ violin and bow from his brother and Pete grabs the mic from James’ hand so it’s just between them.

There are tears in Regulus’ eyes and James hopes that they’re good, “I know that this isn’t what we rehearsed, and I know that you don’t normally like things like this. In fact, I’m pretty sure you’ve told me before that if I proposed to you in public you would say no, and you still can. But I thought that this was the perfect time.” Another deep breath, “You are my everything, Regulus. We both wanted to do this to reveal our relationship and… I’m fucking this all up and I went off book the minute that I started speaking,” they furrow their brows and Regulus softly laughs, “I’m just embarrassing myself so I’m going to stop talking here soon and I’ll just show you everything I wrote later when we get back home.”

Pete laughs softly behind them and they sigh, “This is the Wildest Dreams tour because the fact that we’re all here was something that we assumed would only be a thing in our ‘wildest dreams’ and if I’m being honest, that’s what our relationship felt like to me for a while. Then when we got together, it was my wildest dream that we’d get married. But… here we are, so.” They wet their lips and bite their bottom one for a moment before offering Regulus a shy, lopsided smile, “I love you, and would you make me the happiest person in the world and marry me?”

Regulus watches them for a while, and James is sure that this is the quietest that they’ve heard the crowd this entire night. There’s not even a shuffle in the crowd of thousands around them, and James would know, they are picking up on every single noise in high definition. They could hear a pin drop, bouncing like it’s in slow motion.

And then there are tears dripping down his face and he softly laughs, “How dare you make me cry in front of all of your fans.” And he reaches out his hands, one to cup James’ face and the other to grab at the box, “Of course I’ll marry you, Jamie.” Then he’s surging forward to kiss them.

The cheer the crowd around them lets out is enough to shatter glass and there are tears streaking down both of their faces, and they’re smiling a little too broadly for the kiss to properly work, but James is so fucking happy.

Eventually, Sirius pats both of their shoulders aggressively, “Alright you two, you’re in front of a crowd, and that’s my fucking brother.” James laughs and gently pulls away, but when they look up at Sirius, his face is red and there are tears streaming down his face, Remus is just behind him, arm around his fiance’s waist and also looking just a bit choked up.

James slips the ring onto Regulus’ finger before slowly standing up. They pull Regulus up with them and brings him to lean against his body while they walk over to where Pete put their mic back. They readjust their mic stand while Remus, Sirius, and Pete surround them, “Uhm… I don’t know what else to say. This- this has been a fucking wonderful night, and I’m glad you all enjoyed it!” A round of clapping and cheers, “That’s what I like to hear. I’m going to cut this short because we’re all… a little high in emotion right now,” the band laughs around them, “I hope you all have a fucking wonderful rest of your night, get home safe, and good night London!” The lights go down and the crowd gives them one more round of standing applause, chanting for them while they disappear off stage.

Once they’re in the wings and out of the way of crew who rushes out to start cleaning up, Sirius practically tackles the both of them to the ground, “You guys are fucking engaged!” James laughs, sounding choked up once more.

“Let’s do this once we’re back in the green room,” James smiles, pushing their best friend off them and dragging the rest of the band into the green room. James glances at themself in the mirror, seeing that their eyeliner and their eyeshadow is streaked from their tears. They watch Sirius jump at his brother in the mirror and smile softly as Remus and Pete as they walk up to James.

Remus rests his hand on their shoulder, “Good job James, I’m proud of you.”

“Congrats.” Pete hums, smiling at them.

James smiles softly, “Thank you guys. Thank you for helping me with this. You too, Pads.”

Sirius pulls away from his brother only long enough to blubber out, “I love you so much Prongs.” Then he pulls Regulus back into his chest, burying his face into the younger’s shoulder.
