must you go so soon? (stay with me)

Summary:

His room, once so welcoming now just felt like they were intruding. Hushed giggles and whispers that had once filled this room had bloomed and then decayed in a blink of an eye. It was a mess; the room, everything was in chaos, it was a huge gunk of clutter despite Azure usually keeping his room the cleanest he could manage. Two Time personally offered to clean Azure’s room after his…Abrupt passing. Nobody glanced twice at the idea, after all the two were inseparable, two peas in a pod, attached to the other's hip, ‘best friends.’ Every step into the room made Two Time feel just more out of place, like a trespasser, a fish out of water, in a sense they felt useless– They couldn't bear to clean out his room, remove the last remnants of him. So they stood there feeling like a pen with no ink.

Work Text:

Their eyes flicked over the decaying plants on the shelves, each one in worse shape than the last. A knot formed in their stomach, they were supposed to take care of the once flourishing plants. If he was still here he’d nag them about letting them die before letting a smile tug on his lips and say "Don't worry, though! We can always get a new one!” and they’d begrudgingly smile back.

But now he was gone, and they weren't sure how to live without him.

These days sharp chains had held Two Time in a chokehold and with every passing second in his cabin it just got tighter and tighter as if seeing how long they could go before they reached their breaking point. Various members said that it was bound to happen, that it was God's plan for him and we should all pray for his safety. But they couldn't. They didn't even show up to the lousy funeral the others prepared. How pathetic is that?

The floorboard under their weight creaked, against their better judgement they decided just to take a look, that wouldn't hurt right? Just a quick skim. Their fingers tightened on their dagger stashed in their pocket as they strided through the cabin, other than the mess the room’s condition seemed to be perfect, just like he left it. Their gaze drifted over to his bed, the blanket was hastily folded on the night he left, he was in a hurry otherwise it had its same familiar scent they'd grown accustomed to, the same scent that once had them tangled in…Not worth thinking about that right now, it's in the past, he’s six feet under and long gone. They look slowly drawn out steps to the shelves filled with books, photos and plants. All of them dug up memories Two Time had tried to bury.

Two Time’s fingers brushed against a photo frame of Azure and themselves, Two Time looking bashful as Azure strikes a pose confidently, underneath the photograph there's his faint handwriting of what looks to be written ‘Best friends!’ with the E’s backwards. Their eyes burnt but nothing fell, vulnerability was for those who were privileged. A mirror hung on a wall, broken and shattered into a million pieces, it probably realised the truth of this cruel world and couldn't take it anymore. It destroyed whatever future it could have had with him and no matter what the mirror did, it’d be forever destroyed and a wreck.

They slumped against the only wall that wasn't blocked off and bowed their head, sand slipped through their fingers as they were slowly being swallowed fully by quicksand, their usual painted smile had disappeared, and now they only felt numb. They felt helpless. This was all their fault, how could they put God first before their own ‘friend?’ How were they foolish enough to let him die in vain? Let him die with every other member of the church believing he was a traitor? Their fingers twitched out, attempting to grasp onto the wooden tiles but it found an unfamiliar journal shoved away and hidden instead, a journal written by him.

They yanked the journal open and flipped through the pages, scanning every word as their lips began quivering and eyes started glistening. Countless pages of Azure documenting Two Time’s hallucinations and worrying for their mental health, for their well-being, how he knows they've been distant recently and he thought he did something wrong.

The rest of the pages were blank, presumably because of his death. Right, his death. He died on that flower bed with a dagger driven into his organs. Not that they saw it– Haha. The others whispered about it. They didnt…That's silly. The others were foolish, they could never get the bond between them and Azure. Never. Who cares if they gossip about what happened that dreadful night Azure died? Not Two Time. Their eyes flicked back to their dagger in their pocket, its stained red. Oh. Did– Did they forget to clean it? Usually they’re more attentive than that. Usually Azure would remind–... It's stained red. Red. Eerily similar to blood– No. It is blood, but not their own. The now cold liquid belongs to someone deceased, someone dear, someone who adored plants, someone who nagged Two Time daily, someone who would worry for them, someone who was always optimistic…They were just describing Azure, weren't they?

That's right, they were the one that had killed him that night, sacrificed him to their almighty god. He trusted them. He trusted them and they just…drove a dagger into his back. The decision they made that fateful night will forever haunt them, like a ghost haunting their steps. The blood was truly on their hands and that was slowly eating them up inside. Their knuckles turned white as their grip tightened on the journal, they really lived up to their name, didn't they? Goddamn it. What was the point of living without him? What was the point of anything?

Their eyes flicked back to their dagger, it beckoned them to come closer, it pleaded for them to let it trail over their body like a ghost of a lover, Two Time closed their eyes longer than necessary before re-opening them, the dagger had taken the form of Azure– Or was that their imagination? They found their will slipping, it was always hard to say no to Azure. He spread his arms wide as if asking for a hug and like a lamb to the slaughter, they obliged. But they weren't met with the recognizable warmth of his skin; they were instead met with a metallic surface and sharp pain in their heart. Oh, they were going to die, weren't they? They didnt feel afraid of death though. They looked back at Azure, his eyes were blurry and scrubbed out– They couldn't remember it, they couldn't remember his eyes. That terrified them more than the death bit, their knees hit the wooden floor and as gunks of crimson came rushing down, at least now their blood will be intertwined with Azure’s, mixing together like they were always bound to meet. The blade smiled back at Two Time as their head hit the floor, it was only fair to have such a punishment after committing such a heinous act to their lover.
