Summary
Martin had held Jon’s hand, the night before he left for Great Yarmouth. Or rather, Jon had held his - he’d taken Martin’s hand in both of his own and cradled it against his chest, where Martin could feel the painful thrumming of his heart. Neither of them had spoken much, even as they huddled close together, foreheads resting against each other. Jon’s face was right there, breathing in the same air, and it would have been so easy to kiss him, but Martin couldn’t. It would have made things real, somehow, in a way this strange embrace did not. To kiss him would have been to say goodbye.
“Jon…” he’d whispered instead. He didn’t have anything else to say, really, just a deep and urgent need for Jon, and Jon shivered against him as though just hearing his own name was enough to make him come undone. Martin could see his throat working as he swallowed thickly and took in a shaky breath.
“I’ll come back,” he’d said, squeezing Martin’s hand. “I promise.”
And that had been a lie.
