“-sick and in bed, Ann,” the boy says with way too many unnecessary hand gestures. “He’s probably still worse off!”
“Well, yeah, I guess,” the girl replies, not that Goro hears much more of her as they pass him in the corridor.
He is too busy standing still, frozen in place.
His rival is… sick?
Ren Amamiya is sick, so he can’t go to the TV studio – and thus, he doesn’t meet the Detective Prince, nor does he make a deal with his Justice.
It won’t stay that way for long though, not if it’s up to Goro Akechi.
Except… Meeting one’s rival is a lot harder than it seems.

Summary
It is really fucking inconsiderate of his soulmate, Goro seethes, not letting him know that his murder plans will fall through.
Well, murder and suicide, he supposes, sitting on Amamiya's bed with his arms crossed as the thief falls apart next to him. "This wasn't supposed to happen!"
"You're telling me?" Goro shoots back. "I had a very romantic double suicide planned for us – and you went ahead and ruined it!"
Goro knew for months now that he would have to kill his soulmate. He made his peace with this decision; has made the necessary preparations.
Ren knew for months now that his soulmate would try to kill him. He just never expected said soulmate to kill himself right after.

“Joker,” Morgana calls hysterically, “are you saying that out of all people, the Black Mask is your soulmate?!”
Well. Ren is pretty sure it was the Black Mask who said the words, not him, but he still kind of ends up nodding, but also shrugging because what the fuck.
Soulmarks are found on everyone’s left arm; the first words your soulmate will say to you.
Usually, this would make meeting your soulmate a relatively easy task.
Ren doesn’t have that kind of luck.

“Come on, Akechi, I let you bully me into making mediocre coffee,” Amamiya teases, leaning on the bar again.
“Such a big word, where did you learn it?” Goro grumbles back, but alas, the food is still too hot for consumption. “The onions worked last time; now I’m using them as a precaution.”
Amamiya blinks. “Are you haunted by vampires or something…?”
Goro snorts. “That’s garlic, not onions.” Garlics have a potent smell as well though… Too little too late, unfortunately, Goro thinks. He will just have to stick with his current option. “No, it’s worse: I’m going on a date.”
Amamiya tilts his head.
Goro Akechi’s forced to endure the worst punishment a person can probably get: being set up on blind dates by his way-too-nosy friends.
Between combatting the accusations that he even needs a love life in the first place, actively sabotaging said love life with the help of Ren Amamiya, the new barista at his favorite cafe, and the occasional early mid-life crises, Goro learns more about himself than he ever expected to.
Do not try this at home.

The table in question currently hosts a single occupant; a boy of his age, with longer hair and an outfit that honestly doesn’t look out of place even in a fancy restaurant like this.
It takes Ren a moment to place him, which – seeing as they have barely met and even that was like two weeks ago – is an accomplishment, or so he thinks.
“-detective, wasn’t it? Adachi-kun or something-”
“Akechi,” he corrects, without meaning to.
Ren keeps seeing the same boy all over Tokyo. Is it really surprising that he wants to talk to him?
Unfortunately, the universe seems to have other plans.

Fucking hell, Goro thinks, heart skipping a beat. Shido was actually right about how much Amamiya still carried a torch for him?
This is horrible.
For Amamiya, that is.
For Goro’s plans, it will work perfectly.
Ren Amamiya, the exiled prince, is returned to the royal palace, given back the title of his birthright and offered the hand of the current prince in a marriage meant to mend all the hurts of the past.
Goro Akechi is not above marrying his old flame, if it will finally get him the crown. Amamiya’s willingness is quite suspicious though… Was he really returned, or did he want to come? And more importantly: why?
The answer is, naturally, both quite simpler and a lot more complex than one would think.
