Summary
Maxwell cut his teeth early on, wrestling Johnwell out of the way for first access to the washroom or shoving the door open on Hatwell, who always obnoxiously took the longest getting ready even though he always ended up looking stupid anyway. It prepared him well for university dorms, where violence was less common but struggle for the communal showers was no less harried.
The challenge comes now, of course. Even a large ship like the Zephyr has only so many facilities, and he’d, maybe presumptuously, left his towel and soap in one of the private showers, the very one Olethra MacLeod had taken up nearly an hour ago.

“It, uh, takes over me sometimes,” he says. His voice is quiet, almost lost beneath the sound of the air rushing around them. “It’s sporting and I’m good at it, but then there’s something else. Beneath my skin, and sometimes it just… bursts out and I like it too much and I can’t stop myself.” He can’t bring himself to speak any louder, can’t bring himself to believe that someone else is hearing him say this. He’s a rowdy and he’s delighted in the rebellion, in the moments of abjection when someone can see the gleam of skillful violence in his eyes and flinch back. Violence is a means to an end, but that’s not all it is to him. “And it’s also the most interesting thing about me. The only thing, really, about me.”

Eventually he’ll go back to Gath and he’ll be Maxwell Gotch again, the seventh Gotch son. They’ll find the professor and Olethra will go off on a million adventures with her as she’d always dreamed. Maybe they’ll write, like their grandparents had all those years ago. He’ll fund her discoveries, maybe they’ll see each other in brief moments when she returns to the ground, maybe they’ll speak fondly of all this, of Zood, her first adventure, his only one.
No, even with a clear end in sight, even if they were to begin… something, knowing the end, the only thing the original Wind Riders had expressed any caution over was this, was entanglements between the crew.
They can’t. Simple as that, so there’s no need for any examination of what he may or may not feel for her.
