Despite having a room and a building and a city to call home, he could never quite bring himself to unpack entirely. Jess sat up groggily and looked around his tiny bedroom–a twin bed, a small dresser/side table, a thrifted lamp, and a rug. His clothes, shoes, and CDs were stuffed in random boxes and baskets, cluttering up the otherwise bare space. The only things with their own, dedicated shelf were the books—a collection he’d been carefully curating and rebuilding since leaving Connecticut for good.
That was the extent of his worldly possessions.
For the most part, he was okay with that. He’d always traveled light. He even sold his stereo for some extra money and opted for a small portable CD player. He loved that thing more than he loved his own mother. It was practically a security blanket. He looked down at the thing and watched the CD inside spin when he hit “Play.”
