The TV’s neon bright blue touched my hand as I fiddled with the remote’s buttons, never pressing, just passing by.
I avoided glancing at the TV since my head finally stopped thumping after a while. Not only that, but I didn’t feel like watching whatever junk was on the TV, too. This was why I just looked at my…clean, prim hands.My nails were perfectly cut, so much so that it looked like it belonged to a girl, unfortunately. The white underbelly of my eerily baby-like hands was bleach white, almost blinding the TV’s still blue light. Mommy said it was like a doll’s and, then, I felt bad that I wanted it all caked with mud and all kinds of germs. That I wanted to run away on a train with my grimy hands and woop all the way to Bangor, or anywhere that wasn’t Derry.
I remembered that Mommy was happy, at that moment—yellow teeth flashing in the full moon’s illumination, and I wasn’t. I should’ve been, though, but I wasn’t. My mouth was pencil thin. Mommy followed that up with pinching my cheek (gently, of course) and sending, no, marching me off to bed.
Richie would’ve joked that he wanted Sonia to march him to bed. I would’ve playfully beep-ed him, and—

Richie bounced his knee in the plastic chair outside Room 214 and checked the clock for the fourth time in three minutes.
Senior year. Thursday night. Everyone else was probably at home pretending homework mattered or sneaking beers behind the quarry.
Richie rubbed his palms against his jeans. They were sweaty. Gross.
The door to Room 214 creaked open, and Richie shot to his feet so fast the chair scraped loudly against the floor.
A nurse stepped out “You family?” she asked.
Richie opened his mouth.
“I—” He stopped. Tried again. “Yeah. I mean—kind of. I’m his—” cousin was a lie, boyfriend was… Richie swallowed. “I’m with him.”
“He’s stable. We gave him something to help calm him down. He’s pretty shaken.”
Richie nodded too quickly. “Yeah. He does that.”
The nurse hesitated, then softened. “You can go in. Just keep it quiet.”
