To do that, Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo are sent to befriend him and promise to help him get into SOLDIER. How hard can that possibility be!
Cloud Strife can't believe the newest Firsts actually want to be friends with him! It's almost too good to be true! Maybe a little too good. Cloud can't help, but wonder: why are they so interested in him? When everyone else in Shinra seems to only see a country bumpkin with no place here. One of the many specimens is what appears to be simply a traumatized feral human woman. Her will to survive touches Sephiroth's heart and he wants to help her with all he can. Will he stand by his own senses and do the right thing? Or will he fall from grace and restart the cycle?

Jenova fell in love with the woman injected with her struggling cells, but she hated the scientist the woman worked with. When Sephiroth came into the world, Jenova was content. Then Hojo tried to take Sephiroth away from Lucrecia, and Jenova was angry- angrier than she had been in eons.

My name is Steven Rude.
Eight years ago, a failed terrorist attack on a mako reactor outside of the city of Midgar in a neighboring state left me clinging to my life from extreme mako poisoning. I was there to stop AVALANCHE but, more importantly, to save her. She told me that she could stop the attack, that she could put an end to it all. I begged her not to as it was too dangerous. She ended up saving my life, dragging me to safety while her cohorts escaped, leaving Shinra to decide her fate. The government decided to make an example out of her, sent her to a desert prison hell. I promised myself I would get her out, no matter the cost.
That's when Tseng came to me with a proposition. All I had to do was retrieve a government scientist that ran off with something dangerous and his "employers"--his true masters, not the Shinra administration--would grant my wish. To cement my cooperation, he tossed me my sister's locket. She had been missing for over a decade, leaving one night saying that she had discovered something "inhumane" that the government was doing. I never saw her again after that.
I accepted.
I wish I hadn't.

Prior to joining Shinra, if someone asked Cloud to describe his hero Sephiroth he would’ve said 'inspiring'. After meeting him, Cloud would add the word 'dangerous'. When Cloud became Sephiroth's student, he could only say Sephiroth is 'impossible to please'.
While Cloud struggles to meet the high standard set for him, Sephiroth seems to have greater plans for Cloud than he could ever guess.
Why does Sephiroth look for scars Cloud does not have? Why does the general seem to be reciting a script only he knows the words to?

Hoping to convey his feelings, Cloud held the materia close to his own chest but gave Sephiroth a pleading look, eyes wide as he made a desperate noise in his throat, trying to communicate that he wanted to please him but couldn’t. Cloud rested the side of his head in Sephiroth’s palm, exhaling with relief as the glimpse of a touch soothed him.
“Oh?” asked Sephiroth, fondly petting Cloud’s hair. "You want me to make you be good?”
