Summary
283 AC - Robert Baratheon's forces are defeated by Prince Rhaegar at the Trident, a death knell for the rebellion. The loyalist forces cheer their victory at Harrenhal, with Prince Rhaegar preparing for an imminent return to the capital. However, a warm welcome isn't what awaits him in King's Landing: Lucerys Velaryon, a longtime political opponent, finally succeeds in the two things he'd always worked towards: convincing the mad king to disown his errant son in favor of his grandson, Prince Aegon; and betrothing his daughter to the new crown prince--coincidentally, right before the king's sudden demise.
Lucerys's schemes succeed and he seizes virtual control of the capital upon the king's passing, with some reluctant assistance from Princess Elia. When Rhaegar returns, he finds his throne occupied by his son, and under the control of his father's closest ally and his wife. Having politically outmaneuvered the crown prince and achieved his ambitions, Lucerys Velaryon must join forces with the Princess Regent and do what Velaryons do best: Clean up the messes of Targaryens. -
