“You’ve already assumed that title in my mind.”
Will gazed at him for a moment, unblinking. “You know what sort of god I’d be,” he finally murmured, both a warning and an invitation, issued with the acerbic curl of his lips. It made Hannibal’s heart quicken.
“I know what sort of God you are,” Hannibal echoed, desire clutching him. “Merciless, imperious, jealous… demanding. Nothing less than the god of the medieval Christians. He drove thousands of men and women into monasteries under oaths of poverty and celibacy, a sacrifice freely given under the all-consuming power of their devotion.”
[In the wake of their rebirth from the sea, Hannibal surrenders himself into Will's hands, but even the faith of God's most devoted servants is tried and tested.]

He knows what this is; he’s textbook, after all. Depressed mood, loss of interest, insomnia, feelings of pointless guilt and shame, suicidal ideation. He’s a mess.
He’s depressed. With his past, his prior experience, who can blame him?
How sad, he thinks as he lays there, that his partner is a psychiatrist with no way to help him. It’s because Will has no clue on how to help himself, so how is Hannibal supposed to help him?
“That’s the point of therapy, my love,” murmurs Hannibal, in his mind.
Shut up, Will tells him sharply, unkindly.
The issue is not that, he concedes to himself. He shifts in the sheets, finds himself in the fetal position, clutching indents into the soft skin of his belly with dulled nails. Drags them over his scar, his smile, and finds one sprouting on his face, too. Quickly feels it drop.
Will's been struggling lately. Hannibal eventually helps, when Will finally accepts it.

"I've gotta clean these out." Will said pensively as he entered the bathroom. Hannibal shrunk in the tub, humiliation washing over him. The pit in his stomach boiled his entrails while they were still contained inside of him. The glass of the bottle slid against the porcelain with a clear ringing as Will set it on the lip. He screwed open the bottle and handed it to Hannibal.
"I'm going to have to stitch you up too." Will coughed into his fist, clearing his throat, "We don't have an anesthetic," he explained. Hannibal did not have time to protest as Will wrapped his fingers around the bottle and brought it to his lips for him.
“This will have to do.”

During the fall, Hannibal receives the brunt of the injuries, which leaves him unable to care for himself. Will discovers how much he enjoys taking care of him.
