The Jedi stand on the edge of the crowds, watching. They’re dressed in their best but their best is plain and they stand out in their simplicity, especially compared to their hosts. Dooku does find it a bit too opulent. A bit wasteful, ironic when about half the speeches at dinner had been about the need to control budgetary spending. But Naboo was extremely wealthy, known for its art, architecture, and fashion, and never missed a chance to show off. Everyone knew once they were chosen to host this year’s summit that they wouldn’t hold back. But Dooku cannot outwardly admit that he finds it a little excessive because that would mean admitting his apprentice is right. Impossible.
Dooku and his moody teenage apprentice attend a diplomatic function on Naboo and cross paths with a figure who will one day shape both their fates. Qui-Gon hates parties. Palpatine hates Qui-Gon.
