Summary
But somebody seeing him for who he used to be... as Diago instead of Vis...
Well, it isn't as bad as he'd expected.
Even the thought of it, when the invitation to Suus had been extended to Vis in the first place, had made his palms sweaty and his throat tighten. It was a wrench in the plan; an inconvenience; a risk above anything else. One misstep, one lingering look, and every wall he'd built, every lie he'd meticulously weaved, would crash down, unravel, expose him. He'd be dead, or destined for the sapper before he could even blink. Stepping foot in this place again, seeing Fadrique there, it had made Vis's stomach turn, his fight or flight wanting to carry him far, far away. He couldn't have imagined that it would be exactly what he needed to get through this forsaken trip.
Or: After his conversation with Fadrique, Vis reflects.

Summary
I feel sick. I feel like my stomach is tying itself in knots. It only gets worse. As the music lulls and a slower, softer song begins to drift in, Aequa removes her hands from his neck and places them on his chest, his arms. They share a small smile. And, as if nobody is watching, as if they have the whole villa to themselves, her eyes flutter closed, he leans in, and…
I feel like I'm drowning.

Aequa accepts an arranged marriage for the good of the Governance-Religion united front. Vis doesn't quite know how he feels. Until he does.

Summary
Vis was a linguist. He chose every word carefully, wove his sentences together, let emotion into his voice purposefully. Everything expertly chosen in a cocktail of pure vitriol. Vis had secrets- Aequa knew it, they all did- and he never seemed careless with them.
But rotting gods, did he know how he sounded when he let Cal roll from his tongue? The warmth that colored his voice, the smile that touched his lips? Emissa might have had his arm, had his ear, but Callidus had something… different, and Aequa wasn't sure either of them knew.
OR
Aequa is pretty sure that Vis is in love with his best friend. Nobody told Vis. Or Callidus. Or Emissa. Or Indol, really.

Summary
He makes himself walk quietly, padding through the steps of the Academy’s staircase, though there isn’t much use to this as nobody is awake at this time of the night, or this early in the morning. This is why he's left the infirmary in the first place. He just needs to be alone. Away from everybody and anybody and maybe the rest of the world. He needs air and he needs space and he needs to thrash around.
He’s about halfway down when he hears her voice.
“Going somewhere?”
He exhales sharply, and then turns to face Aequa, standing at the very top of the staircase. Of course.
Aequa catches Vis in the dead of the night — him feigning for air and maybe something to punch — a week before the students' official graduations from Catenan Academy.

Summary
Vis and the Thirds near the shore of Suus aboard a Will-powered ship. It’s the worst, really. This was his home. This was his place. The Thirds’ summer excursion is his own people’s stolen land, now regarded as exotic and tropical, all for their relaxation, and a humble backdrop for their school training. They know nothing. Nothing of its past, nothing of the boy that was once called ‘Diago’. Even acting to keep up appearances is worth little to Vis now that he has returned under the guise of a new name — and an ersatz family who is nothing like his previous one.
-
Although Vis makes some attempt to hide his discomfort during his return to Suus, it isn’t too hard to notice. And the Thirds do.

Summary
He is subject to the world, to everything out there that sought to destroy him, that has destroyed parts of him. Callidus is gone from him, Emissa is practically unrecognizable, and he’s to be working within the Senate, the very thing that he had been running from at the start of this endeavor.
It’s nauseating. Even not fully lucid, Vis knows that there is no going back, not if he wants to make any of this even remotely worth it. The betrayal, the blood, the tears, the lives lost. His head spins with it, sweat prickling at his forehead.
And then Aequa walks in.
Or; In the wake of the Iudicium, Vis spirals. Aequa and Ulciscor come to visit him.
