    Summary

“Oh, hi Mindy,” Buck greeted. “Is everything okay?”

“Um, I just got off of a call with a man named Bobby Nash,” she started, “he said he’d tried calling your personal phone a few times, but figured you were busy.”

Buck’s stomach dropped. Something pulled tight in his chest.

“Why did he call you?” Buck asked shallowly.

“Well, I – your husband is in the hospital, Buck,” Mindy said gently, like she knew the concept of wearing the spousal gloves. “Mr. Nash said there was an accident at work and that you should get to Presbyterian as soon as possible.”

    Buck’s breath caught.

“Eddie’s – he’s hurt?” he breathed into the phone.

"Mom said not to let you leave before dinner," May said.

"Wow." Buck said as he rolled his eyes. "And here I was told that I was watching you today. Seems more like the other way around."

Theo pointed at the photograph in Buck's hands. "Who's he?"

The question left a strange hollow feeling in Buck's chest. He looked back at the photo. The photo of someone so important in Buck's life but someone Theo had never met and never would.

Theo had never heard Bobby's laugh. Never seen him manning the barbeque at a 118 family get together. Never stolen baked goods cooling on the counter while Bobby pretended not to notice.

"Is he your daddy?" Theo asked with an innocence only kids could have.

Buck had no intentions of ever letting Margaret or Philip Buckley anywhere near Theo. Growing up feeling like he was never enough, he didn't want to give them a chance to ever make Theo feel a fraction of how he felt.

Buck heard himself answer before he had fully thought it through.

"Yeah," His voice was quiet as he smiled sadly at the photo. "Yeah, buddy. That's my dad."

The bumper caught him hard enough to lift him off of his feet. Pain exploded through his hip.

Buck flew backwards, a wordless scream leaving his mouth at the fire running through his hip and down his leg.

When he landed on solid ground again, flat on his back, the wind was knocked out of his lungs. Sharp pain exploded everywhere.

    And then he was rolling.

    Rolling.

    Rolling.

The world flew past him in fragments as he tumbled down the steep slope towards the ravine.

“Whose dads did Theo catch smooching?” Chimney slides into the chair across from them, an easy smile stretching across his face.

Buck chooses that exact moment to appear at the top of the loft stairs, freezing as soon as Chim’s words leave his mouth.

Chimney glances around the group, clearly waiting for a continuation of the station gossip. His grin fades as he slowly takes in the silence, gears turning as he clocks the red staining Eddie’s cheeks and the way Buck’s jaw unhinges itself and hangs slack.

“Oh my fucking god.” He deadpans. “Theo caught you two –”

“No, we weren’t –” Eddie tries, desperately throwing himself in front of the avalanche of lies that is quickly picking up speed and swallowing up everyone in its path.

“Eddie!” Buck interrupts, so shrill and sharp that everyone in the vicinity freezes and stares. “Can I talk to you over here, please?”

Theo mishears Eddie accusing Buck of "mooching" and accidentally sets fire to Eddie's plan to 1) come out and 2) tell Buck that he's in love with him. Miscommunication and a brief fake-dating stint ensue.
