Father nodded, then went back to the paper. Orion spared a quick glance for Mother. She had her hands gripped tightly around her mug; head also bowed in Father’s presence. When she noticed him staring, she shot him a glare and he quickly retreated. Orion didn’t know what he was expecting but, for some reason, he felt disappointed.

Alys sniffled quietly as she wandered the castle listlessly. She’d somehow ended up in the dungeons. She couldn’t even drudge up fear at being in snake territory. Maybe tomorrow she would panic belatedly, but now? She was too exhausted to do anything but let the tears burn trails down her cheeks.
She let out another quiet sniffle, jumping nearly a foot in the air when she heard a meow. Her head snapped up to see a cat – fur entirely grey except for one black leg that looked like it was from another cat entirely – peering down at her with milky white eyes.
She’d heard rumours but had brushed them off as just that. She’d never in her life have expected the rumours of a dead cat who ushered crying children into the arms of death roaming the halls of Hogwarts to be real. She should have been scared if the rumours were to be believed but maybe... maybe death wasn’t such a bad option. It wasn’t like anyone would miss her.
