Doc is a very intelligent man who has never done anything wrong, ever.
Consequently, the fact that there is now a stranger in the middle of his lab, looking utterly disheveled and very confused, is absolutely not his fault. Neither is the smoking phone booth-like machine which the stranger has just stumbled out of. This is all going perfectly normal and according to plan.

“There’s a list of reasons that’re way too long to go through.” His shoulders sag. “It’d be better for her if I didn’t say anything.”
“Is that what you want though?” Grian pokes his arm, frowning a little.
“…I thought it’s what I wanted. I thought I could be happy with just being her friend. But the more I get to know her, the more I just—I want to stay by her side and make her happy. She’s so wonderful, and she’s been through so many painful things. I want to be there for her and be her safe space.” Scar catches himself rambling, causing his face to turn red. “Ah—I can’t believe I just said all that out loud. Wow! That’s embarrassing…” He brings his hands to his face, hiding it.
Grian can only laugh good-naturedly. “It’s sweet, Scar. She sounds like she means a lot to you. Tell her.”
His face falls into something somber and upset, eyes gloomy as his lips curve downwards. Scar nods, staring down at his lap. “But what if it doesn’t end well? I don’t have the greatest track record either, you know. And I can’t do that to her. I can’t hurt her like that. What if I lose her?”
Everything changes.

"Scar?" Grian repeated, more shifting, like he was sitting up. Tired but gentle confusion in his voice. "Are you okay?"
Scar should've hung up. It was bad enough he'd actually called. He should've lied, should've said it was a misdial and pretended to be okay. He should've done a hundred things and he did the one thing he shouldn't, because despite everything that happened between them, Scar felt safest with the one who hurt him. He said, a trembling whisper, "No."

Grian felt his heart stop for a moment. But that was exactly Scar’s style - silver-tongued and flirtatious, even with his most platonic of friends.
So he laughed it off, punching Scar lightly in the shoulder. “Like I’m gonna find someone who wants to practice kissing with me.”
“Aww, don’t get down on yourself, G,” Scar said, ruffling Grian’s hair playfully. “It’s not a hard sell.”
Grian raised an eyebrow skeptically. “Yeah? Would you do it?”Or: Grian is self-conscious about his lack of experience. Scar offers to help him out.
