Summary
The airport is cold.
The airport is cold, or maybe that’s just Buck. Cold. Empty. Numb.
He’s felt that way since he got the call yesterday. That was cold too. Impersonal, even though it was his mother on the other end of the line. Even though it was his father’s death she had to deliver the news of. Sudden and unexpected. A stroke, Margaret had said, voice thick with emotion and yet still, somehow, emotionless.
She’s always been good at disappearing into her grief, though. Letting it eat at her completely until there was nothing left but the shell of a woman. The husk of a mother. It stands a reason that it wouldn’t be any different this time. The carcass of a wife.
At least, Buck had thought, guilty that it was his first, she told me this time. At least she didn’t keep this from me for nearly thirty years.
Or, Phillip Buckley dies and Buck — he isn't as alone in it as he thinks.

Summary
The water rises faster than Buck can think.
It taunts them as he splashes through it, trying to leverage himself into different spaces around the beam. Together they push and pull at it. Together they wear out every aching muscle in their body and ignore every deeper twinge because if they stop, if they admit defeat—
That’s not an option.
But the water rises anyways.
The water rises and Eddie’s resolve diminishes with every inch closer it gets.
The water rises and Buck stumbles through it, creating tidal waves in his wake. It rises and his resolve rises with it. He’s not leaving Eddie here. He’s getting him out before the water rises above his head.

Summary
“Okay,” Buck says quietly, squinting at him, like Eddie’s a code he’s cracking. “What the hell is going on with you? Why are you so jumpy?”
“Why are you whispering?” Eddie shoots back, backing up further against the counter to put some space between them.
“Because you’re—” Buck gestures wildly in Eddie’s direction. “You’re being strange. Did you— is this another Kim thing? Why are you being so weird?”
“I’m not being—”
Buck lets out an annoyed huff through his nose, like a furious bull. “Eddie, I swear to—”
Then, for some fucking reason, Eddie’s mouth moves, his brain switching completely off as he blurts out, “I had a sex dream about Ravi!"
Or: Eddie lies to Buck.

Summary
“So, everything will be pretty straight forward. We’ll have opening statements, present evidence, you’ll testify.” Dana waved her hand over her files. “We’ll go over your testimony before you do so that when Mr. Malloy’s attorney questions you, you’ll be prepared to—”
“Do I have to?” Buck asked, flinching when Dana’s eyes turned sharp. “Do I have to testify?”
A fine tremor had settled into Buck’s hands, working up his arms into his shoulders, and Bobby couldn’t help but feel like he was watching Buck splinter in front of him.
Buck gets attacked on a call and swept up in a whirlwind of events that he never asked for.Bookmarked by AvidFFReader90
