Summary
"Why did you say that?" Shane asks quietly after they've showered and crawled into bed. He can tell Ilya is half asleep already, and he hadn't meant to say anything at all.
Ilya hums at him, a confused noise. Shane almost doesn't say anything, but Ilya squeezes his side, holding him still instead of pulling him closer.
"Why did you tell Harris that you've loved me since Saskatchewan?"
or
Shane starts to spiral, thinking about what a person can do to someone that they love. (He should probably talk to someone about this, but he probably won't, at least for a little while.)

Summary
For about a year, up until the Boxing Day fight, Shane started to feel like Ilya no longer actually likes him. Between his temper, trying to get Shane to sleep with other people and Threatening to cheat on him with Troy Barrett, Shane doesn’t know what to do or think anymore.
Then, the Boxing Day fight happens and Shane decides he needs to end it for the both of them. Maybe love isn’t enough.

Summary
“You dropped out of college!” Svetlana repeated as she threw her hands up. “You had two semesters left in Boston! You were top of your program! You talked about moving to New York, opening your own firm, taking over the world—and now your big life ambition is sitting on a plush couch in the Canadian tundra waiting for Mr. Real Estate to finish his stock trades?”
Ilya laid his fork down with a deliberate clink against the ceramic plate. He rested his elbows on the table, leaning forward, his blue eyes sharp and terrifyingly clear.
“Sveta,” he began, his tone dropping into that familiar, authority. “In Boston, I woke up at six every morning to run in the freezing rain. I spent eight hours in lectures surrounded by rich idiots who thought they were geniuses because their dads bought a building. I spent four hours every night memorizing financial models I already knew how to build in my sleep, just so some eighty-year-old professor could give me a checkmark on a piece of paper. The point is, why would I fight the world when I can just enjoy the simple pleasures of life? I spent my whole life surviving. Shanya gave me a place where I don’t have to.”

Summary
There was no way he was clueless. No one stayed good friends with a serial rapist for so long and never noticed a thing wrong.
Shane didn’t believe his little redemption story. Troy Barrett was bad news, and he would be damned before letting him visit the cottage.

Summary
Laughter came from the living room, where Ilya and his mother were watching a movie. He loved to hear Ilya laugh. It was one of his favorite sounds in the world.
He would rather be in there with them, watching whatever they’d chosen, even if he’s never heard of it and wouldn’t like it at all, which was the usual when it came to Ilya’s taste in movies.
But his mom wanted his decision by tonight so she could follow up on the offer tomorrow morning.
So Shane got to be boring. Again.

Sacrificing something of yours - your own happiness, your chance to walk hand-in-hand with your boyfriend - to stay in the closet is fine (well, not necessarily fine, but sure as hell your own choice). But sacrificing something that belongs to others? That isn't really forgivable, is it?

Summary
After the Boxing Day fight, Ilya's place doesn't almost crash and Shane doesn't propose. Instead, he turns to self harm to cope with the self hatred feels as a result of the Metro's hostility, Ilya's inability to communicate, and his belief that he's the reason for everything wrong in their relationship and the team dynamic.
What starts as a self proclaimed unhealthy coping mechanism comes to a head when Ilya finds out and realizes just how much he underestimated the degree to Shane was struggling and the impact hiding had on him.
Will they find their way back to each other or will Shane let his depression eat him alive, leaving everything he ever loved, including hockey, to the past.
___
I really want to explore a story where Shane struggles deeply with his mental health. I find it hard to imagine that everything didn't take more of a toll on him. It's dark but there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is pretty heavy so if self harm or eating disorders are triggering for you pls don't read!
