Summary
Odysseus stood in front of him, bow steady in his blood-soaked fingers, arrow notched and aimed between Telemachus’ eyes. Telemachus had spent years studying the man before him, comparing the two of them. He’d lost count of the number of times people in the palace had told him that he looked just like his father had at his age.
Now he wondered if he would grow into Odysseus’ rage, if his own eyes would harden the way his father’s had, if he’d grow to enjoy the taste of blood if he only lived another twenty-five years.

Odysseus offers to raise the infant son of Prince Hector as his own, desperately hoping to spare an innocent life. Despite fate, Zeus accepts his bargain. For a price.
You can probably guess what that price is, considering this is Zeus we're talking about.
Except, the price goes deeper than Odysseus thought. After all, he never clarified exactly what he meant by raising the child as his own, and the gods do love their word games.

His crew were all kneeling. Well, Penelope deserved no less.
Or, Odysseus, exhausted and delirious after 9 days of being awake, mistakes Poseidon for Penelope. This changes everything and nothing.

‘Witnessing this,’ Eurylochus thought as he watched Odysseus- still bleeding and wearing what was practically rags by now- sway dramatically, ‘was worse than being potentially dead.’
Hera, sensing the tension between the mortal and her husband, cleared her throat pointedly. “That's enough, Odysseus,” she interjected with a raised eyebrow, her tone carrying a hint of amusement.
Or, how Odysseus managed to save himself as well as his crew. He learnt that ruthlessness was mercy from Poseidon, and that there are other ways of persuation from Circe.
